Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center

The Special Treatment Unit is a facility in which civilly committed sex offenders are held, pursuant to the New Jersey Sexually Violent Predator Act of 1998 (N.J.S.A. 30:4-27.24 to -27.38). It is operated by the New Jersey Department of Corrections, and is located in a separate building within East Jersey State Prison in Avenel, New Jersey. It is near the Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center, New Jersey's center for incarcerated sex offenders, also in Avenel. Residents of the three facilities interact only with the residents in their own facility. In 2016, its population was 428. Since the program's inception in 1999 (at a different location), about 15% of the 579 sex offenders who were civilly committed in New Jersey have been discharged to the community after treatment. The state estimated in 2016 that there were 15 patients at Avenel who were convicted as juveniles but were sent to Avenel, indefinitely, once they completed their sentences. Public defenders and attorneys for the residents put the number at 30.In 2016, Gary Lanigan, the Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Corrections, and a host of others were hit with a class action suit filed by detainees. They claim their civil rights are violated because they are not provided "adequate and meaningful mental health treatment" (necessary for their possible release) due to "systematic deficiencies." The complaint also says that in addition to the reportedly inadequate treatment, plaintiffs have "been confined in punitive conditions" that overstep the goal of the Sexually Violent Predator Act. Plaintiffs seek redress for the defendants’ alleged preference to "warehouse" such offenders out of sight in an attempt to indefinitely detain and punish, rather than treat supposed mental disabilities. "Individual counseling" at the facility is described as "uncommon".

Avenel is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located within Woodbridge Township, in Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Avenel is approximately 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Midtown Manhattan along the North Jersey Coast rail line As of the 2020 United States census, the CDP's population was 16,920, a decrease of 91 (−0.5%) from the 17,011 recorded at the 2010 census, which in turn had reflected a decline of 541 (−3.1%) from the 17,552 counted in the 2000 census.

East Jersey State Prison (formally referred to as "Rahway State Prison") is a medium-security prison operated by the New Jersey Department of Corrections in Avenel, Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. It was established in 1896 as Rahway State Prison, and was the first reformatory in New Jersey, officially opening in 1901. It housed 1,227 inmates as of 2020.

The South Branch Rahway River flows north north through Woodbridge Township, New Jersey before entering the Rahway River in Rahway, New Jersey, 4.5 miles from the Arthur Kill. Its source is the Roosevelt Park lake in Edison, New Jersey.The South Branch is subject to both tidal and fluvial flooding. With coastal surges, the Rahway River can cause backflow into the South Branch as far as St. Georges Bridge in Woodbridge. Outflow from the south Branch to the main channel is inhibited by the "U" shape turn in the Rahway River and six bridge constrictions within a mile. The South Branch has an 11.6 square mile drainage area from "intensely developed portions" of Rahway, Edison, Woodbridge and Metuchen. Repeated "flashy" fluvial flooding in this river is a consequence of urbanization with impervious surfaces exacerbated by downstream channel constrictions, stream bank decay and steep hills. Fluvial flooding is felt to be the major component of flooding.

Avenel is a New Jersey Transit commuter rail station on NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line, located in the Avenel section of Woodbridge, New Jersey. The station was rebuilt in 1940 and 1992. After receiving limited service between 1985 and 2019, service at the station was increased.

Rahway () is a city in southern Union County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. A bedroom community of New York City, it is centrally located in the Rahway Valley region, in the New York metropolitan area. The city is 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Manhattan and 5 miles (8.0 km) west of Staten Island. Built on the navigable Rahway River, it was an industrial and artisanal craft city for much of its history. The city has increasingly reinvented itself in recent years as a diverse regional hub for the arts.As of the 2020 United States census, the city's population was 29,556, an increase of 2,210 (+8.1%) from the 2010 census count of 27,346, which in turn reflected an increase of 846 (+3.2%) from the 26,500 counted in the 2000 census.

The Rahway River Bridge is a rail bridge over the Rahway River, in Rahway, Union County, New Jersey, U.S., a few blocks north of Rahway station, on the Northeast Corridor (NEC). The arch bridge was built circa 1915 by the Pennsylvania Railroad at the time it was widening and elevating the tracks on a viaduct on its mainline through New Jersey, a project that had been initiated in 1901.The bridge carries the NEC and is located at MP 19.13 of the New York Division. It is used by Amtrak, including Northeast Regional and Keystone Service, and New Jersey Transit's Northeast Corridor Line and North Jersey Coast Line, which junction near Union Tower to the south. The bridge was documented by the Historic American Engineering Record in 1977. It is part of the unlisted Pennsylvania Railroad New York to Philadelphia Historic District (ID#4568), designated in 2002 by the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office.

The Rahway Public Schools are a comprehensive community public school district that serves students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade from Rahway, in Union County, New Jersey, United States.As of the 2020–21 school year, the district, comprised of six schools, had an enrollment of 4,056 students and 325.5 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 12.5:1.The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "CD", the sixth-highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. From lowest socioeconomic status to highest, the categories are A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J.

Union County Performing Arts Center (UCPAC), formerly the Rahway Theatre, is a non-profit performance venue in Rahway, New Jersey, a small city west of Staten Island that was recently named "#2 Best Small Town Arts Scene" in the country by USA Today. As of the early 2020s, downtown Rahway has become a regional hub in the performing and visual arts. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. UCPAC is the site of the annual Rahway International Film Festival.

Robinsons Branch is a tributary of the Rahway River in Union and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey, United States.The headwaters of Robinsons Branch are in Fanwood, Plainfield and Edison, New Jersey. It flows through Scotch Plains, Westfield, Clark, and Rahway, emptying into the Rahway River approximately five miles above the Arthur Kill. The drainage area is 21.6 square miles, mainly in Union County. The river is impounded at Robinson's Branch Reservoir and Milton Lake, and tidal to Milton Lake Dam. At the confluence of Pumpkin Patch Brook with Robinsons Branch flooding is a frequent problem, exacerbated by densely developed land. Flooding is both fluvial and tidal.
