On October 24, 2004, a Beechcraft Super King Air 200 aircraft, registered N501RH and owned by NASCAR team Hendrick Motorsports, crashed into mountainous terrain in Stuart, Virginia, during a missed approach to Blue Ridge Airport in Martinsville, Virginia. The aircraft was transporting eight passengers and two flight crew to Martinsville so they could attend the NASCAR event at Martinsville Speedway that afternoon. All ten people on board were killed; among them, members of the Hendrick family including John Hendrick, president of Hendrick Motorsports, his twin daughters, and Ricky Hendrick, former Busch Series driver and heir to the Hendrick empire. Hendrick Motorsports staff involved includes Kimberly and Jennifer Hendrick, General Manager Jeff Turner, and chief engine builder Randy Dorton. The pilots were Richard Tracy and Elizabeth Morrison. Other passengers include Joe Jackson, an executive at DuPont and Scott Lathram, Tony Stewart's pilot.

Aurora, also known as the Pink House, Boxwood, and the Penn Homestead, is a historic home located at Penn's Store near Spencer, Patrick County, Virginia. It was built between 1853 and 1856, and is a two-story, three-bay, hipped-roof frame house in the Italian Villa style. It features one-story porches on the east and west facades, round-arched windows, clustered chimneys, and low pitched roofs. Also on the property is a contributing small one-story frame building once used as an office. It was built by Thomas Jefferson Penn (1810-1888), whose son, Frank Reid Penn founded the company F.R & G. Penn Co. that was eventually acquired by tobacco magnate James Duke to form the American Tobacco Company.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Fairystone Farms Wildlife Management Area is a 5,321-acre (21.53 km2) Wildlife Management Area in Patrick and Henry counties, Virginia. Named for the fairy stones that are common in the area, it comprises several parcels surrounding much of Fairy Stone State Park and the Philpott Reservoir in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area includes steep slopes and a small amount of bottomland, including an eight-acre (3.2 ha) marsh impoundment set aside for migrating waterfowl. Forests containing oak, hickory, pine, and beech are managed for the benefit of both game animals and other wildlife.Fairystone Farms Wildlife Management Area is owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The area is open to the public for hunting, trapping, hiking, seasonal horseback riding, and primitive camping. Access for persons 17 years of age or older requires a valid hunting or fishing permit, or a WMA access permit.

The district includes 18 contributing buildings and 1 contributing object in the central business district of the town of Stuart. The district includes a variety of commercial and governmental buildings including the Stuart Post Office constructed by the Public Works Administration in 1940, the Patrick County Bank (1911), Bank of Stuart (1896), Stuart United Methodist Church and the Stuart Baptist Church. The district includes one and two-story brick commercial buildings dating from the early to mid 20th century including the Stuart Drug Store (1938) and the Hudson's Drug Store (1941). Located in the district and separately listed is the Patrick County Courthouse.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Patrick County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Stuart, Patrick County, Virginia. It was built in 1822, and is a two-story, brick building consisting of a projecting, three-bay central block with flanking wings in the Jeffersonian Roman Revival style. The front facade features a pedimented portico supported by four Tuscan order columns. It is topped by a small bell tower. The building was remodeled in 1928, and refurbished in 1936 and 1971.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It is a contributing property in the Stuart Uptown Historic District.

Patrick County High School is a comprehensive public high school in Stuart, Virginia, USA. The school currently enrolls over 1,000 students in grades 8–12. It is the only public high school operated by the Patrick County Public Schools. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools along with the Virginia Department of Education. Students who graduate from Stuart Elementary, Hardin Reynolds Memorial, Woolwine Elementary, Blue Ridge Elementary, and Meadows of Dan Elementary matriculate into Patrick County High School. Opening in 1970 after a county-wide consolidation of schools, Patrick County High School is located approximately one mile south of the town of Stuart in Patrick County, Virginia.

The district encompasses 184 contributing buildings, 3 contributing sites, and 1 contributing object in the wooded and agricultural northeastern corner of Grayson County. It includes mostly frame or log structures, with a few brick buildings, and several well-preserved examples of early-19th century log dwellings still in use. Notable buildings include the Knob Fork Primitive Baptist Church (c. 1800), William Bourne House "Walnut Hill" (c. 1790), Austin King House (c. 1847), Tomlinson House (c. 1851), O'Donnell Place (c. 1860), Ephraim Boyer House (c. 1870), John Fielder Farmhouse (c. 1850, c. 1870), Ebenezer Methodist Church and Cemetery (c. 1884), Spring Valley Academy (c. 1880), Glenn Cornett House (1904), and Phipps Bourne Farmstead (1909). Located in the district is the separately listed Stephen G. Bourne House.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

The Spencer–Penn School is a historic school complex at 30 George Taylor Road in Spencer, Virginia. Its main building, a large brick Colonial Revival building, was built in 1926–27, and is the only surviving non-residential building in the community to be built before World War II. The campus also includes the school's first building, a frame structure built in 1911. The school served the area until 2004, when it was closed by the county school board. The campus is now home to the Spencer–Penn Centre, a non-profit education and special event center. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Grassdale Farm is a historic home located at Spencer, Henry County, Virginia. It was built about 1860, and is a two-story, center-passage-plan frame dwelling with Greek Revival and Greek Revival style influences. Two-story ells have been added to the rear of the main section, creating an overall "U" form. Also on the property are a variety of contributing buildings and outbuildings including a kitchen, smokehouse, cook's house, log dwelling, and office / caretaker's house dated to the 19th century; and a garage, playhouse, poultry house, two barns, greenhouse, Mack Watkin's House, granary and corn crib, and Spencer Store and Post Office dated to the 1940s-1950s. Grassdale Farm was once owned by Thomas Jefferson Penn, who built Chinqua-Penn Plantation outside Reidsville, North Carolina, where the Penn tobacco-manufacturing interests were located.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
