Praia Grande (Big Beach) is a beach situated in the civil parish of Ferragudo, municipality of Lagoa, the Portuguese Algarve. One of many beaches to obtain the name Praia Grande, this coastal zone is located on the eastern back of Rio Arade estuary, south of the town of Ferragudo. It is just inside the mole that shields the river entrance and the port area of Portimão, and runs north to the Forte de Sao João do Arade. The crescent-shaped 627 metres (2,057 ft)-long beach extends from the accessway, at the end of Rua Doutor Coelho de Carvalho southeast to the cliffs, with a smaller beach extending 163 metres (535 ft) north to the summit of the fort, separated by boulders. Like other beaches in the western Algarve, it is bordered by cliffs from the Miocene epoch, that are rich in marine fossils. With median temperatures between 20–22 °C (68–72 °F), its protected location within the mole permits swimming/wading, windsurfing, bodyboard and sailing.The municipal authority services the beach with outdoor parking, security/surveillance, changing areas and showers, while commercial services include bar/restaurants, sunshade rentals and small craft hire.

Ferragudo is a Portuguese civil parish at the western border of the municipality of Lagoa. The population in 2011 was 1,973, in an area of 5.41 km². Ferragudo serves mainly as a bedroom community for its much larger neighbour, the city of Portimão; its residents routinely travel across the Arade River to work in the neighboring municipality.

The Fort of Santa Catarina (also known as the Fort of Santa Catarina de Ribamar) is a medieval fort situated in the civil parish of Portimão, in the municipality of Portimão in Portuguese Algarve. The structure was considered one of the last Philippine military projects in the Algarve, erected to defend the peninsula from pirates and privateers, as well as military invasions. Its construction is one of the better examples that work of Alexandre Massai, a military engineer who toured the Algarve (between 1617 and 1621) to reinforce numerous military fortifications along the coast.

The Arade (Portuguese pronunciation: [ɐˈɾaðɨ]) is a river located in the region of the Algarve, southern Portugal. the river's course takes it through the municipalities of Silves, Lagoa and Portimão. The source of the river lies to the southwest of the Serra do Caldeirão mountain ridge, in a valley called Barranco do Pé do Coelho. The river has a total length of 75.0 kilometres (46.6 mi), with its source being 481 metres (1,578 ft) above sea level. The mouth of the river empties into the Atlantic Ocean between the city of Portimão and the freguesia of Ferragudo, in Lagoa Municipality. From the time of the Moors until the 19th century, the Arade was navigable up to as far as Silves about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi), where an important port used to exist, especially for the cork trade. Nowadays only small boats can go that far.

Praia da Rocha (English: "Rock Beach") is a beach and built up area on the Atlantic Ocean in the southern section of the concelho of Portimão, Algarve, southern Portugal. On the eastern edge of the beach stands the Fort of Santa Catarina (Portimão). A 17th century fortress built to defend the mouth of the Arade River. Now a popular tourist attraction accessible directly from the beach or the road above.Nearby Praia dos Três Castelos beach is well known for the bizarre and dramatic limestone rock formations that stand along the water. In some places, the cliffs are sheer and drop straight down to the beach, but in others, erosion has left fanciful shapes likened to castles or pyramids.The beach soccer tournament, Mundialito de Futebol de Praia, which hosts some of the world's best national teams, took place here annually from 2005 to 2012.Algarve Tourism lists a number of attractions in the region (including marine and waterparks), as well as the area's restaurants and bars, nightlife and marina complex.In July 2022, the beach will be the host of the large hip-hop music festival Rolling Loud. Headliners include American rappers J. Cole, A$AP Rocky, and Future.

The Ponta do Altar Lighthouse (Farol da Ponta do Altar) is located in the Ferragudo parish of the Lagoa municipality in the Faro District of Portugal.The lighthouse, of unusual design, consists of a small square turret attached to a one-story caretaker's house. It supports a red lantern on its terrace. The house, often compared with the appearance of a small schoolhouse, is painted white, with exposed stones and a red tiled roof. It is located on a promontory, used since prehistory for pagan rituals, on the eastern side of the entrance to the port of Portimão, about 7 km south-west of Lagoa. In recent years the attractiveness of the site has been impacted by the construction of a tall, cylindrical grey concrete communications tower, which dwarfs the lighthouse.The Ponta do Altar Lighthouse was first proposed by Ricardo Peyroteu on June 21, 1884. It started operations of 1 January 1893. The tower is 10 meters high and 2.7 meters wide. The original light was white and used oil as the fuel source. It combined with two smaller lights at the ends of the two moles at the entrance to Portimão harbour. In 1948, the light was changed to a red one with a range of 10 nautical miles. In 1954, the energy power was converted to acetylene gas and in 1976 the lighthouse was electrified, although gas was still used for the light until 1983. In 1992, the Ponta do Altar lighthouse was automated, using a system supplied by the Gisman company, being then controlled by the Lighthouse of Cabo de São Vicente near Sagres. In 2001, the colour of the light was changed back to white, with a range of 16 nautical miles. It uses a fifth-order Fresnel lens.

Ferragudo is a halt on the Algarve Line in the Lagoa municipality, Portugal. It was opened on the 15th of February 1903, under the name Portimão. After the construction and opening of the Portimão Railway Bridge and station, in 1922, the name was changed to Ferragudo.

Parchal is a town and a former civil parish in the municipality (concelho) of Lagoa, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Estômbar e Parchal. The population in 2011 was 4,019, in an area of 3.86 km². It is situated in the northwest part of the Lagoa Municipality. Parchal serves mainly as a bedroom community for Portimão, and many of its residents travel daily across the Rio Arade to work in the neighboring municipality.

Portimão (Portuguese pronunciation: [puɾtiˈmɐ̃w] ) is a city and a municipality in the district of Faro, in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. The population in 2011 was 55,614, in an area of 182.06 km2. It was formerly known as Vila Nova de Portimão (IPA: [ˈvilɐ ˈnɔvɐ ðɨ puɾtiˈmɐ̃w]). In 1924, it was incorporated as a cidade and became known merely as Portimão. Historically a fishing and shipbuilding centre, it has nonetheless developed into a strong tourist centre oriented along its beaches and southern coast. The two largest population centers in the Algarve are Portimão and Faro.

Estádio Municipal de Portimão is the current stadium of Portimonense S.C. It is located in the centre of Portimão in the Algarve, Portugal and was opened in 1937 for local football club Portimonense S.C. Its capacity is 9,544 people. It hosted Portimonense's stay in the Primeira Liga in the 1980s. In 2006, Portimonense were forced to play away from the Estádio Municipal in the Estádio Algarve, which – built for Euro 2004 – is 70 kilometres from Portimão. In February 2007, however, Portimonense returned home and the Portimão Municipality purchased the site five months later. This allowed the renovations required for the hosting of higher level competition: the installation of green seats (in the colours of the city), new turnstiles and security facilities. In the 2009–10 season, Portimonense won promotion to the Primeira Liga for the following season. The summer of 2010 was a time of further renovation of the stadium, as modifications were made to the pitch and drainage system, as well as the west stand, bringing the capacity to 9,544 at the cost of €800,000. The construction took longer than expected and the club had to wait until the turn of the year before they could use their stadium again. The club's first home league match in the renovated stadium was on 6 February 2011 against Paços de Ferreira, who emerged victorious with the only goal of the game.

Portimão station (Portuguese: Estação de Portimão) is the main railway station in the city of Portimão, Portugal, operated by Comboios de Portugal. It opened on 30 July 1922.
