Oregon State Hospital Historic District

Oregon State Hospital is a public psychiatric hospital in the U.S. state of Oregon, located in the state's capital city of Salem with a smaller satellite campus in Junction City opened in 2014. Founded in 1862 and constructed in the Kirkbride Plan design in 1883, it is the oldest operating psychiatric hospital in the state of Oregon, and one of the oldest continuously operated hospitals on the West Coast.The hospital was established after the close of the Oregon Hospital for the Insane in Portland, located 47 miles (76 km) north of Salem. Originally named the Oregon Hospital for the Insane, the Oregon State Hospital was active in the fields of electroconvulsive therapy, lobotomies, eugenics, and hydrotherapy. In the mid-twentieth century, the facility experienced significant overcrowding problems, with a peak of nearly 3,600 patients. In 1961, Dammasch State Hospital opened in Clackamas County near Portland, which served to mitigate the hospital's overcrowding issues. Dammasch would close in 1995. In the early twenty-first century, the hospital received public criticism for its aging facilities and treatment of patients, and the hospital's management of 5,000 canisters of unclaimed human cremains was the subject of a 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning series published in The Oregonian. The discovery of these remains is the subject of the 2011 documentary "Library of Dust".In 2007, the state of Oregon approved a $458 million plan to rebuild the main hospital to a downsized 620-bed facility, which was completed in 2013. Portions of the original hospital buildings were demolished, though the center of the Kirkbride building was salvaged and renovated, and now houses a mental health museum. Oregon State Hospital is located in the eponymous Oregon State Hospital Historic District, and was registered with the National Register for Historic Places in 2008. It was the primary filming location for the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, as well as being the subject of a series of photographs by photographer Mary Ellen Mark in 1976.

Oregon State Penitentiary (OSP), also known as Oregon State Prison, is a maximum security prison in the northwest United States in Salem, Oregon. Originally opened in Portland 173 years ago in 1851, it relocated to Salem fifteen years later. The 2,242-capacity prison is the oldest in the state; the all-male facility is operated by the Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC). OSP contains an intensive management wing, which is being transformed into a psychiatric facility for mentally ill prisoners throughout Oregon.

The Oregon State Forester's Office Building is a historic building in Salem, Oregon, United States that is used by the head of the Oregon Department of Forestry. The 1938 building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1982. It was designed by Linn A. Forrest in the "National Park Style". The NRHP listing includes two additional contributing structures.

Shelton Ditch is an artificial canal in Marion County, Oregon, United States. Built in the mid-19th century, it originates from Mill Creek east of Airport Road in Salem, passes through a corner of the Salem main Post Office property, and along the southern edge of downtown Salem. Shelton Ditch passes by the north side of Pringle Park before emptying into Pringle Creek. After the Mill Race joins Pringle Creek near Salem's city hall, Pringle Creek passes under Commercial Street and empties into the Willamette River next to Riverfront Park across from Minto-Brown Island Park.Shelton Ditch passes along the edge of Salem Hospital's property. This has been a problem in the past as Shelton Ditch is prone to flooding, necessitating evacuation of the hospital's patients, including during the Christmas flood of 1964.

Willamette Town Center, formerly Lancaster Mall, is an exterior entrance shopping center located in Salem, Oregon, United States. Opened in 1971, the main part of the center has 550,000 square feet (51,000 m2) of space. The regional mall is located on Lancaster Drive and is bordered on the West by Interstate 5, making Willamette Town Center a retail hub for the city of Salem.

The Oregon Military Department is an agency of the government of the U.S. state of Oregon, which oversees the armed forces of the state of Oregon. Under the authority and direction of the governor as commander-in-chief, the agency is responsible for planning, establishing, and enforcing rules and procedures governing the administration, supply, and training of the Oregon National Guard (consisting of the Oregon Army National Guard and the Oregon Air National Guard), when not in the active service of the United States. The Department also maintains all state-owned or leased military facilities, including posts, camps, military reservations, and rifle ranges.

Roberts High School is a high school in Salem, Oregon, United States. It provides non-traditional educational programs in the Salem-Keizer School District. Rather than a centralized campus, Roberts High School consists of departments at different sites in Salem and Keizer. These branch sites include the Downtown Learning Center, Structured Learning Center, Bridge, and Internet-based SK Online. In the 2006-2007 school year, over 1,000 students were enrolled in Roberts High School. Roberts High Schools is named in honor of former Oregon governor Barbara Roberts.

North Salem High School (originally Salem High School) is a public high school in Salem, Oregon, United States, founded in 1906. It was known as Salem High School until 1954.

The L. B. Day Amphitheatre (formerly the L. B. Day Comcast Amphitheatre) is an outdoor concert venue in Salem, Oregon, United States, within the Oregon State Fairgrounds. It was completed in 1987 with 9,000 seats, and named for L. B. Day, an Oregon State Senator and longtime supporter of the State Fair. In 1991, the venue was expanded to 14,000 seats to make it the largest arena of its type in Oregon at that time. The amphitheatre serves as the main stage when the State Fair is held in late August through Labor Day, and also hosts concerts at other times of the year. Bands and performers that have played at the venue include ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cinderella, Queensrÿche, Heart, Ted Nugent, Charley Pride, and Ricky Skaggs. In 2005, the Oregon State Fair chose not to book national acts on the amphitheatre stage. Since 2013 major national acts have returned to the L. B. Day Amphitheatre.

The Oregon State Fair is the official state fair of the U.S. state of Oregon. It takes place every August–September at the 185-acre (0.75 km2) Oregon State Fairgrounds located in north Salem, the state capital, as it has almost every year since 1862. In 2006, responsibility for running the fair was delegated to the Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department, and the division is now known as the Oregon State Fair & Exposition Center (OSFEC), which holds events on the fairgrounds year-round.

Lansing is a neighborhood in Salem, Oregon, United States, located in the northeast part of the city. The neighborhood is bordered on the north by Silverton Road, on the south by Market Street, on the east by Hawthorne Avenue, and on the west by Evergreen Avenue. The Lansing neighborhood contains two City of Salem Parks: East Gate Basin Park located at 3203 Hawthorne Avenue NE, and Livingston Park located at 2751 Hawthorne Avenue NE. The Lansing neighborhood contains two Salem-Keizer Public Schools: Washington Elementary School located at 3165 Lansing Avenue NE, and Waldo Middle School located at 2805 Lansing Avenue NE. Lansing Area Neighbors and Community Partners are currently holding Partnership Meetings on the second Thursday of each month from 10 to 11:00 am at La Casita/Little House, 3032 Sunnyview Road, NE. All who are interested in the livability of the Lansing Area are welcome to participate. The Lansing Neighborhood Association meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm at Waldo Middle School, 2805 Lansing Avenue NE. All are welcome.
