The Souffel (German: Suffel) is a river in Alsace, France. It rises near Kuttolsheim and joins the river Ill (a tributary of the Rhine), south of La Wantzenau after a course of 25 kilometres (16 mi). It gave its name to two villages on its banks: Souffelweyersheim and Griesheim-sur-Souffel. Tributaries of the Souffel are Haltbach, Plaetzerbach, Musaubach, Kolbsenbach and Leisbach. In 1815 the Battle of La Suffel was fought on its banks.

Fort Ney and previously known as Fort Fransecky is situated in Alsace and lies about 5 kilometres (3 mi) north of Strasbourg in the forest of Robertsau next to the river Ill. It formed part of a belt of fortifications that protect Strasbourg.Fort Fransecky was built between 1873 and 1876 and continuously upgrade from 1880 to 1914 and its guns commanded the river and other nearby transport routes including the railway from Strasbourg to the frontier town of Lauterbourg. The fort was renamed Fort Ney in 1918.During the German occupation of France during World War II Fort Ney was a centre for study of gases like phosgene. In an attempt to find an antidote to the gas 52 concentration camp prisoners were exposed to the gas and then treated. After exposure, many of them suffered from pulmonary edema and four of them died.In 1944 the local German high command used the fort as their headquarters during the Allied campaign to liberate Strasbourg. Strasbourg was liberated by a French armoured division on 23 November 1944, and the fort's German garrison of about four hundred held for a further two days before surrendering on 25 November.Today the fort in use by the French military and is not open to the public.

Fort Rapp (once called Fort Moltke) is part of the 14 fortifications erected in Alsace by the Prussian general Von Moltke after the fall of Strasbourg in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War and following the siege of Strasbourg. Built between 1872–1874 and inaugurated on 26 September 1874, it was part of the fortifications meant to protect the city from French attacks. Since 1918 and the return of Alsace-Lorraine to France, it is named after the French general Jean Rapp. The fort is located in Reichstett, a village situated 10 minutes north of Strasbourg and belonging to the Urban Community of Strasbourg. The fort contains 200 rooms and was able to host a garrison of 800 men. It was protected by 18 cannons of 90-150mm.
