Gmina Suchedniów

Suchedniów [suˈxɛdɲuf] (listen) is a town in Skarżysko County, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, Poland, with 9,067 inhabitants (2004). It is the seat of the urban-rural district Gmina Suchedniów.

Execution in the Brzask Forest was a mass execution of Polish citizens carried out by the German occupiers on 29 June 1940 in the Brzask Forest near Skarżysko-Kamienna. During the all-day massacre, German SS officers and Ordnungspolizei executed approximately 760 people. Among the murdered were members of Polish underground organizations and representatives of the social and intellectual elite from the area of the pre-war Kielce Voivodeship, arrested as part of the so-called AB-Aktion. The crime at Brzask was the largest execution carried out in the Kielce Land during the German occupation.

Its seat is the village of Bliżyn, which lies approximately 12 kilometres (7 mi) west of Skarżysko-Kamienna and 27 km (17 mi) north of the regional capital Kielce. The gmina covers an area of 141.08 square kilometres (54.5 sq mi), and as of 2006 its total population is 8,617. The gmina contains part of the protected area called Suchedniów-Oblęgorek Landscape Park.

Bliżyn [ˈbliʐɨn] is a village in Skarżysko County, Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, in south-central Poland. It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Bliżyn. It lies on the Kamienna river and Bliżyn Reservoir, approximately 12 kilometres (7 mi) west of Skarżysko-Kamienna and 27 km (17 mi) north of the regional capital Kielce.The village was first mentioned in 1410, when King Władysław II Jagiełło spent a night there on his way to the battle of Grunwald. In 19th century Stanisław Staszic founded several minor manufactories and factories there, as part of his plan of creation of the "Old Polish Industrial Area". During World War II the forests around Bliżyn were a mass murder site of Polish intelligentsia during the so-called AB Action. After the war the forests were made into the Suchedniów-Oblęgorek Landscape Park. There are also two forest nature reserves: Świnia Góra and Dalejów located south of Bliżyn in Puszcza Świetokrzyska (Holy Cross Forest). There are also ruins of the 19th-century factories, a notable church and numerous remnants of dinosaurs in the rocky areas around the village.
