The Derry Urban Area (Irish: Limistéar Uirbeach Dhoire) is the urban area that includes and surrounds the city of Derry in Northern Ireland, and is part of the Derry City and Strabane District Council area. It had a population of 93,512 in the 2001 census. It is the second largest urban area in Northern Ireland (after Belfast) and the fifth largest urban area in Ireland (after Dublin, Belfast, Cork and Limerick). The Derry Urban Area consists of Derry City, Culmore, New Buildings and Strathfoyle.The Greater Derry area, that area within about 20 miles of the city, has a population of 237,000 and comprises Derry City Council, Limavady Borough Council, Strabane District council excluding the Castlederg area, and parts of North East Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, namely Inishowen, Letterkenny, Ballybofey/Stranorlar and Lifford. The term, like the term Greater Belfast, has no official relevance particularly in this case since it incorporates areas from two jurisdictions, however it is used for ease of reference.

Derry Gaol, also known as Londonderry Gaol, refers to one of several gaols (prisons) constructed consecutively in Derry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Derry Gaol is notable as a place of incarceration for Irish Republican Army (IRA) members during the Irish Civil War, and for its numerous executions, seven of which took place between 1820 and 1923. On Christmas day 1939 interned Irish Republican prisoners took control of the jail, protesting their continued imprisonment without charges or trials. On 20 March 1943, 21 Irish Republican prisoners tunneled their way out of Derry Jail with the assistance of Jimmy Steele (republican). This escape was referred to as "The Big Derry Jail Escape".

The siege of Derry in 1689 was the first major event in the Williamite War in Ireland. The siege was preceded by an attempt against the town by Jacobite forces on 7 December 1688 that was foiled when 13 apprentices shut the gates. This was an act of rebellion against James II. The second attempt began on 18 April 1689 when James himself appeared before the walls with an Irish army led by Jacobite and French officers. The town was summoned to surrender but refused. The siege began. The besiegers tried to storm the walls, but failed. They then resorted to starving Derry. They raised the siege and left when supply ships broke through to the town. The siege lasted 105 days from 18 April to 1 August 1689. It is commemorated yearly by the Protestant community.

The City of Londonderry parliamentary constituency was a single member constituency in the Parliament of Northern Ireland. It was created in 1929, as one of the five single member constituencies replacing the former five member Londonderry constituency.The constituency included the eastern part of the city of Derry and its environs including the Waterside district and Eglinton area.The seat was held continuously by Ulster Unionist Party candidates, although it was often contested by other parties.The constituency was last contested at the 1969 General Election. The Northern Ireland parliament was suspended in 1972 and abolished in 1973. In elections to various Northern Ireland assemblies and forums which sat from 1973 to 1986 the area formed part of a revived Londonderry constituency. Since the abolition of the 1982–1986 Northern Ireland assembly the area has formed part of the Foyle constituency.

The Londonderry and Enniskillen Railway (L&ER) was an Irish gauge (5 ft 3 in (1,600 mm)) railway in Ireland.

The Verbal Arts Centre is based in Derry, Northern Ireland, and is a centre for the development of the verbal arts and literacy (i.e. the ability to read, write, communicate and comprehend). It was established in 1992 as an educational charity. In 2000 it moved to the First Derry School, a listed building. The project's goal is to promote the written and spoken word and is also involved in research and the publication and provision of information, including material for schools. It has also developed literacy building programmes for schools, works on literary heritage, storytelling and works also with youth and community groups throughout the north-west. The centre coordinates an annual comic book festival, the "2D Festival". It also promotes verbal arts events. The centre publishes a bi-monthly, Verbal, which has a circulation of over 235,000 and is the largest free literary magazine in Ireland. Launched in January 2007 the publication covers books, authors, reading and the arts in general. The centre hosts a readers circle and children's book club. The centre houses a number of arts and crafts pieces, including works by Louis le Brocquy and John Behan. In 2013, VAC absorbed Lagan Press, an independent arts publisher founded c. 1990 by poet Gerald Dawe and Fortnight magazine manager Patrick Ramsey.

The Diocese of Derry (Latin: Dioecesis Derriena; Irish: Deoise Dhoire) is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church which straddles the international frontier between the Republic of Ireland & Northern Ireland. It is in the ecclesiastical province of Armagh. The diocese was established in the year 1158. The diocese consists of almost fifty parishes and some number of religious congregations have houses in various parts of the diocese. The Cathedral Church of the diocese is St Eugene's Cathedral. Nearby is St Columba's Church, Long Tower.

Free Derry Corner is a historical landmark in the Bogside neighbourhood of Derry, Northern Ireland, which lies in the intersection of the Lecky Road, Rossville Street and Fahan Street. A free-standing gable wall commemorates Free Derry, a self-declared autonomous nationalist area of Derry that existed between 1969 and 1972. On the corner is a memorial to the 1981 hunger strikers and several murals. There is also a memorial to those who died engaging in paramilitary activity as part of the Provisional IRA's Derry Brigade. On 5 January 1969 a local activist, long believed to be John "Caker" Casey, but who might have been Liam Hillen, painted graffiti on a gable wall at the end of a housing terrace stating "You are now entering Free Derry". Civil rights activist and writer Eamonn McCann stated: "That phrase, 'You are now entering Free Derry', I take credit for that. It's not an original phrase but it was I who devised it on the night in question and had it put up on the wall, and that's the most enduring thing I've ever written: You are now entering Free Derry. That came from Berkeley in California in 1956 in a Berkeley Free Speech Movement ... And there was a student occupation of Berkeley College ... In the entrance to Berkeley College there was a big sign that said 'You are now entering Free Berkeley' from the Free Speech Movement, and I said, Well that's cool, and then when we came to Derry, I had that put up on that gable wall...." When the British Home Secretary, Jim Callaghan, visited Derry in August 1969, the "Free Derry" wall was painted white and the "You are now entering Free Derry" sign was professionally re-painted in black lettering. The area in front of the wall became known as Free Derry Corner by the inhabitants. It and the surrounding streets were the scene of the Battle of the Bogside in 1969 and Bloody Sunday in 1972. The houses on Lecky Road and Fahan Street were subsequently demolished, but the wall was retained. It has been repainted at frequent intervals. As currently situated, it now lies in the central reservation of Lecky Road, which was upgraded to a dual carriageway sometime following the demolition of the original terraced houses.

The Bishop Street Courthouse is a judicial facility in Bishop Street, Derry, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It is a Grade A listed building.

Children in Crossfire is a registered charity founded in Northern Ireland which aims to eradicate poverty and help children in war zones and works in partnership with local organizations in the developing world to make healthcare and education more accessible to young children. Children in Crossfire is registered as a charity in Northern Ireland (NIC101412) and the Republic of Ireland (CHY 20045517). It is also a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the United States. The charity has raised funds totaling over £25 million for causes in 10 countries including Malawi, The Gambia, and Ethiopia.The headquarters of the Children in Crossfire is located in Derry.

St Columba's Church, Long Tower is a Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of Derry. It is located in the heart of the city of Derry in Northern Ireland. The present church is built on the site of Roman Catholic worship which goes back as far as the 12th century. The current Long Tower Church began life in 1783 in a much smaller scale than seen today. Father John Lynch, a parish priest in Derry started action to raise funds for building the Long Tower Church and he received finance not just from Roman Catholics but also Protestant people in Derry at the time. The church was opened in 1788.

St Columb's Cathedral in the walled city of Derry, Northern Ireland, is the cathedral church and episcopal see of the Church of Ireland's Diocese of Derry and Raphoe. It is also the parish church of Templemore. It is dedicated to Saint Columba, the Irish monk who established a Christian settlement in the area before being exiled from Ireland and introducing Christianity to Scotland and northern England. Built after the Reformation in Ireland, St Columb's is the first Anglican cathedral to have been built in Britain and Ireland after the Reformation and was the first non-Roman Catholic cathedral to be built in Western Europe.
