Annalong

Longstone GAC is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in Annalong, County Down, Northern Ireland. Set at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in the Lower Mourne parish, the club caters for Gaelic Football, Camogie, and more recently Ladies' Gaelic Football at underage level.

Annalong Forest is located near the village of Annalong in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is made up of two sections: Annalong Wood and Silent Valley. The forest consists of various species of conifer. It is part of the Mourne Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There have been two major forest fires in the area since 2011. One, which started on 30 April 2011, required 10 fire engines to extinguish and caused the temporary closure of several roads. Another, on 24 April 2010, destroyed approximately 50 hectares of gorse and was believed to have been started deliberately.

Slieve Donard ( SLEEV DON-ərd; from Irish Sliabh Dónairt, meaning 'Dónairt's mountain') is the highest mountain in Northern Ireland and the wider province of Ulster, with a height of 850 metres (2,790 ft). The highest of the Mourne Mountains, it is near the town of Newcastle on the eastern coast of County Down, overlooking the Irish Sea. It is also the highest mountain in the northern half of Ireland, and seventh-highest on the island.The Mourne Wall – built in the early 20th century – runs up the western and southern slopes of the mountain, joining a small stone tower at the summit. Also on the summit are the remains of two ancient burial cairns, one of which is the remains of the highest known passage tomb in Ireland. In Irish mythology the mountain was associated with the mythical figures Boirche and Slángha. It was later associated with, and named after, Saint Donard, who was said to have made the summit his hermitage. Up until the 1830s, people would climb the mountain as part of a yearly pilgrimage, which may have originally been a Lughnasadh (harvest) ritual. Royal Engineers camped on the summit for four months in 1826 as part of the Ordnance Survey's Principal Triangulation.

Millstone Mountain is a hill in the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is the most easterly peak in the Mournes and, along with Thomas Mountain and Crossone, is one of the three subsidiary peaks of Slieve Donard.Millstone was produced in the area in the past and there are two former sites to the south-west and north-west of the summit. A granite quarry was opened on the northern side of the mountain in 1824 and a funicular railway, known as the Bogie Line, ran from it to King Street. The railway was diverted to the nearby quarry on Thomas Mountain in 1959. Both quarries are abandoned and the path of the Bogie Line is now a walking trail known as The Granite Trail.

Glen River is a short river in County Down, Northern Ireland. The two-mile (3.2 km) course flows north-east from the foot of Slieve Commedagh and Slieve Donard in the Mourne Mountains into Dundrum Bay at Newcastle, descending 1,500 feet (460 m).It is quite a fast-flowing river with many small waterfalls and deep pools. The bedrock is composed of granite in the upper parts, becoming dark shale lower down. It flows through Donard Forest and Donard Park and is crossed by five bridges. The path that runs alongside the river is commonly used by walkers climbing Slieve Donard.There is an unusually prominent ice house beside the river, just before it enters the forest. It was built by the third earl of Annseley in the 1830s to serve his Donard lodge residence.

Slieve Beg (SLEEV BEG; from Irish Sliabh Beag, meaning 'little mountain') is one of the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland. It has a height of 595.9 metres (1,955 ft).

Slieve Binnian (from Irish Sliabh Binneáin, meaning 'mountain of the little peaks') is one of the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland, 9 km north of Kilkeel. It is the third-highest mountain in Northern Ireland at 747 metres (2,451 ft). The summit is broad and flat with rocky tors at the north and south ends, with the Back Castles, impressive towers of granite, in between. To the south-west is Wee Binnian (from Irish Broinn Bhinneáin, meaning 'breast of Binneán') (460m). It lies east of Silent Valley Reservoir and west of the Annalong Valley. The Mourne Wall also crosses over Slieve Binnian.The mountain is in the townland of Brackenagh East Upper (379 acres), the civil parish of Kilkeel and the historic barony of Mourne.

Slieve Lamagan or Slievelamagan (from Irish Sliabh Lámhagáin, meaning 'mountain of crawling/creeping') is one of the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland. It has a height of 702.2 metres (2,304 ft). Slieve Lamagan stands in the middle of the high Eastern Mournes, overlooking Ben Crom Reservoir to the west, Annalong River valley to the east, and Cove Mountain to the northeast. At its southern foot is a small lake called Blue Lough, and a rock formation known as 'Percy Bysshe' .It is said that the mountain was named Sliabh Lámhagáin, "mountain of crawling/creeping", because its steepness meant it had to be climbed in a crawling position. An older name was Slieve Snavan, from Sliabh Snámháin, which has the same meaning.

Slieve Commedagh (from Irish Sliabh Coimhéadach, meaning 'the guarding/watching mountain') is a mountain with a height of 767 m (2,516 ft) in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is the second-highest of the Mourne Mountains, after Slieve Donard, and the second-highest mountain in Northern Ireland. Slieve Commedagh lies to the northwest of Slieve Donard, and the two are linked by a col. The Mourne Wall passes east–west over the mountaintop, and there is a small one-room tower at the summit. There is also the remains of an ancient burial cairn on the summit. On its southern side is a group of granite tors known as 'the Castles'.The Slieve Commedagh massif also includes the summits of Slievecorragh (to the east), Shan Slieve, Slievenamaddy and Slievenabrock (to the north).

Newcastle Lifeboat Station is situated at South Promenade, Newcastle, a seaside town in County Down, located the foot of Slieve Donard, the highest of the Mourne Mountains, overlooking the Irish Sea, in the south east corner of Northern Ireland. A lifeboat was first stationed at Newcastle in 1854 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The station currently operates the All-weather Mersey-class lifeboat, 12-20 Leonard Kent (ON 1177), on station since 2022, and the smaller D-class (IB1) Inshore lifeboat Eliza (D-775), on station since 2014.

Shimna Integrated College is an integrated secondary school based in Newcastle, County Down, Northern Ireland. The all-ability school was founded in 1994 with the hope of integrating young people from both sides of Northern Ireland's religious divide and giving all of its students 'self-esteem'.

The Newcastle fishing disaster occurred in Dundrum Bay, off the coast of Newcastle, County Down, on 13 January 1843. Fishing boats from Newcastle and Annalong were caught in gale force winds. Fourteen boats sank, killing 73 men.
