Operation Conservation

On 11 August 1970, two Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) officers were killed by a booby-trap bomb planted under a car by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) near Crossmaglen, in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. They were the first RUC officers to be killed by republicans during the Troubles and the first security forces to be killed in South Armagh, an IRA stronghold for much of the conflict.

Cullyhanna (from Irish Coilleach Eanach, meaning 'wood of the marshes') is a small village and townland in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. The village extends further over the townlands of Tullynavall and Freeduff. It had a population of 306 in the 2001 Census. It is within the Newry and Mourne District Council area.

Dorsey Emmet's Gaelic Football Club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the hamlet of Dorsey and the surrounding area of Lower Creggan parish, in the rural south of County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Affiliated to Armagh GAA, it fields football teams at Under-8, U-10 and senior level, and is also involved in Ladies' Gaelic football. The senior men's team plays in the Armagh Junior Football Championship and (from 2013) in the Intermediate League. Dorsey's U-14 players are amalgamated with Newtownhamilton and play as Newtown Emmet's. The U-16s are joined with Belleeks and Newtownhamilton and play as Cavanakill Emmet's.

Annaghmare Court Tomb, also known as The Black Castle, is a chamber tomb located near to the town of Crossmaglen in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It is one of many megalithic tombs on the island of Ireland.

The Battle of Newry Road was a running gun battle between British Army helicopters and Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) armed trucks, fought along the lanes east of Crossmaglen, County Armagh, on 23 September 1993. The engagement began when an IRA motorized team from the South Armagh Brigade attempted to ambush three helicopters lifting off from the British Army base at Crossmaglen, one of them carrying the 3rd Infantry Brigade Commander.

Creggan (from Irish an Creagán) is a small village, townland and civil parish near Crossmaglen in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 246 people. It lies within the Newry and Mourne District Council area.

On 13 February 1991, an Army Air Corps (AAC) Westland Lynx Mk7, serial number ZE380, was shot down by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) in the vicinity of Crossmaglen, County Armagh, in Northern Ireland. The IRA's South Armagh Brigade ambushed the aircraft while approaching the joint British Army-RUC base in Crossmaglen using automatic rifles, general-purpose machine guns and heavy machine guns. The heavily damaged helicopter was forced to crash-land in an open field; the aircraft and its crew were eventually recovered by British forces.

The Republican Memorial is a memorial in Crossmaglen, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. The memorial was unveiled in 1979 during The Troubles, as a dedication to the Provisional Irish Republican Army.

Crossmaglen (from Irish Crois Mhic Lionnáin, meaning 'Mac Lionnáin's cross', IPA: [ˈkɾˠɔʃˈvʲɪcˈlʲɪn̪ˠaːnʲ]) is a village and townland in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It had a population of 1,610 in the 2011 Census and is the largest village in South Armagh. The village centre is the site of a large Police Service of Northern Ireland base and formerly of an observation tower (known locally as the "look-out post"). The square's name commemorates Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich, a local man who became Primate of All Ireland (head of the Catholic Church in Ireland), and who died in 1990. However, the Cardinal originated from Crossmaglen's close neighbour, Cullyhanna. Crossmaglen has its own GAA team, Crossmaglen Rangers GAC. Travelling by road, Crossmaglen is 61.6 miles (99.1 km) to the north of Dublin, 15.8 miles (25.4 km) to the west of Newry, and 51.6 miles (83.0 km) to the south of Belfast.

A unit of the IRA's South Armagh Brigade fired at the British Army helicopter using automatic rifles and heavy machine guns. The disabled helicopter was forced to crash-land in an open field; the aircraft and its crew were eventually recovered by British forces.

On 19 March 1994, a British Army Lynx helicopter was shot down by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) in Northern Ireland. A unit of the IRA's South Armagh Brigade fired a heavy improvised mortar at the British Army base in Crossmaglen, County Armagh. The mortar round hit and shot down the helicopter, serial number ZD275, while it was hovering over the helipad. Three British soldiers and a Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) member were wounded.

Crossmaglen Rangers Gaelic Athletic Club (Irish: Raonaithe na Croise) is a GAA club in Crossmaglen, County Armagh, Northern Ireland. They cater for Gaelic football and camogie. Their home football ground is St. Oliver Plunkett Park, which was opened in 1959. In 1971 the British Army took possession of a portion of the ground despite opposition from the club and the Irish Government, and this led to a controversy regarding the British Army's conduct. The club have won the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship on six occasions. They have won the Ulster Senior Club Football Championship 11 times and won the Armagh Senior Football Championship 47 times.
