West Columbia, Texas

Columbia High School (West Columbia, Texas) is a public high school located in West Columbia, Texas, United States. It is classified as a 4A school by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). It is the only senior high school in Columbia-Brazoria Independent School District which is located in southwest Brazoria County. For the 2021-22 school year, the school was given a "B" by the Texas Education Agency.

The Varner–Hogg Plantation State Historic Site is a historical site operated by the Texas Historical Commission. The site was the home of former Governor of Texas James S. Hogg and his family. The site is located outside West Columbia, in Brazoria County.

The Ammon Underwood House is a historic house in East Columbia, Texas, U.S.. It was first built as a log house for Ammon Underwood in 1835. It became a boarding school in 1839, and his family home in 1839, where he lived with his wife Rachel J. Carson. The house was "moved three times before the 1940s." It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since June 24, 1976.

East Columbia is an unincorporated community in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. It is located nine miles west of Angleton. It was one of the most important inland ports in Texas. The river port became a vital component in the plantation-based economy that developed along the Brazos River in the 19th century. The community was founded in 1824 by Josiah Hughes Bell. A native of South Carolina, Bell came to Texas with Stephen F. Austin's Old 300 colony in 1821. Bell built a landing of log-lines docks and timbered stops on the Brazos River, just below Varner's Creek. Bell laid out the town and called it Marion. Bell sold the townsite to Walter C. White in 1827. By the mid-1800s, the town had a population of 800. The arrival of the railroad in the area led to the decline of steamboat traffic, which had an adverse effect on the town's fortunes. Storms in 1900, 1909, and 1913 were destructive to the community. When oil was discovered in West Columbia in 1918, merchants abandoned East Columbia. By the 1970s, the town's post office had already closed and its population had decreased substantially.

The Levi Jordan Plantation is a historical site and building, located on Farm to Market Road 521, 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of the city of Brazoria, in the U.S. state of Texas. Founded as a forced-labor farm worked by enslaved Black people, it was one of the largest sugar and cotton producing plantations in Texas during the mid-19th century, as well as a local center of human trafficking.It was designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1967. The University of Houston's Department of Anthropology and Professor Kenneth L. Brown has done many years of research at this plantation.

The Retrieve Unit (TDCJ code: RV), later the Wayne Scott Unit, was a Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) prison farm located in unincorporated Brazoria County, Texas. The unit, southwest of Houston, is along County Road 290, 8 miles (13 km) south of Angleton. Scott, which was established in September 1919, has about 5,766 acres (2,333 ha) of land.
