Drum, County Roscommon

The Meehambee Dolmen is a megalithic portal tomb dating from about 3500 BC located in County Roscommon, Ireland. Two local schoolchildren unearthed two stone axes in the 1960s. Initially supported on six upright portals, 2.3 metres high, the capstone is estimated to weigh twenty-four tonnes. The portal stone supporting the back of the capstone has collapsed, allowing the capstone to slide backward out of position and causing the doorstone to collapse. As a result, the capstone now rests at a 45-degree angle. It is thought that these tombs, of which over 1,200 have been identified in Ireland, were either the burial place of a single important king or chieftain or perhaps the tombs of several tribe members who inhabited the area in the Neolithic era. It was known locally as Leabaidh Éirn in the 1930s.

Bellanamullia or Bealnamulla (Irish: Béal Átha na Muille, meaning 'mouth of the mill ford') is a village in County Roscommon, Ireland. It lies 4 km (2.5 mi) from the centre of Athlone, just beyond the urban boundary, on the R362 regional road. The area has experienced growth in the early 21st century, attributable to Athlone's expansion. Although a village in its own right, Bealnamulla is considered a suburb of Athlone town for census purposes. The Meehambee Dolmen, a Megalithic tomb, is located about one kilometre south of the village.

Monksland (Irish: Fearann na Manach) is a townland and suburb of Athlone. The townland lies in County Roscommon to the west of the River Shannon, on the border between the provinces of Connacht and Leinster. Developments in the largely residential suburban area have included a supermarket, a medical centre, other retail space and a business park (Monksland Business Park). As of the 2011 census, the townland of Monksland had a population of 3,306 people.

Cornafulla (Irish: Corr na Fola, meaning 'hill of the blood') is a village in the parish of Drum in south County Roscommon, Ireland about 8 km west of Athlone along the R446 road. In the centre of the village is a national (primary) school, garage and car sales business. The post office and convenience store closed in 2019. The current national school was built in the 1980s to replace the original school. The old school house is now rented by the new school due to the large number of students attending. Construction of a major extension to the school was completed in 2011, and the school was recorded as having over 290 pupils enrolled as of 2013.

Clann na nGael is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the southern end of County Roscommon, Ireland. The area comprises the two half parishes of Drum and Clonown, the parish being St Peter and Paul, Athlone. The club is the most successful in Roscommon in terms of titles won, with 21 Roscommon Senior Football titles, with the most recent in 2018.

St. Peters is a civil parish in County Roscommon, with a small number of townlands in County Westmeath, Ireland. It is located in south-east County Roscommon. St. Peters lies in the barony of Athlone. The townlands in St Peters are: Banks, Bellanamullia, Bellaugh, Bogganfin, Bunnaribba, Canal and Banks, Cartron, Cloonakille, Cloonown, Doovoge, Killnamanagh, Long Island, Long Island (Little), Monksland, Rooskagh, Athlone and Bigmeadow, Ranelagh. The neighbouring civil parishes are: St. Mary's to the east, and Drum to the north, south and west.

The Batteries is a neighbourhood on the western side of Athlone near the River Shannon. The name derives from a group of Napoleonic-era artillery batteries constructed to defend Athlone and the River Shannon.

Castle Naghten is a motte and National Monument located in County Roscommon, Ireland.

St. Aloysius College (Irish: Coláiste Naomh Aloysius) was a secondary school in Athlone, Westmeath, Ireland. It was primarily a school for boys, though its Leaving Certificate Repeat Programme was open to all students.

The siege of Athlone was part of the Williamite War in Ireland between the supporters of King James II, who were known as Jacobites, and the supporters of King William of Orange. The siege began on 17 July 1690, when Williamite Lieutenant-General James Douglas arrived outside the Jacobite held city of Athlone with ten regiments of foot and five regiments of horse for a total force of 12,000. The Governor of Athlone, Colonel Richard Grace decided to defend the western part of the city. The Jacobite troops destroyed the bridge over the Shannon River that connected the eastern and western parts of the city, before the Williamite Army arrived. The city's garrison consisted of three regiments of foot and eleven troops of horse for a total force of about 4,500. General Douglas sent a messenger to Colonel Grace demanding he surrender the city. Colonel Grace responded by firing a pistol shot over the head of the messenger and stating "These are my terms; these only, I will give or receive, and when my provisions are consumed, I will defend till I eat my old boots." General Douglas commenced a bombardment of the city with twelve cannon and two mortars, the city of Athlone's guns returned fire. After two days the Williamite Army attempted to ford the Shannon River but were repelled with considerable loss. The artillery fire continued between the two sides until 24 July when General Douglas was forced to retire having suffered about 400 casualties, lacking provisions and equipment for a longer siege and having heard rumors that Patrick Sarsfield and the Jacobite Cavalry were en route to relieve the city of Athlone's garrison. Although the Jacobites withstood the week long siege, a year later the Williamite Army returned and took the city. Governor Richard Grace died defending the city during the 2nd siege of Athlone in 1691.

Athlone was besieged twice during the Williamite War in Ireland (1689–91). The town is situated in the centre of Ireland on the River Shannon and commanded the bridge crossing the river into the Jacobite-held province of Connacht. For this reason, it was of key strategic importance.
