It was the birthplace of Roman Emperors Trajan, Hadrian, and possibly Theodosius. It flourished under the reign of Hadrian, becoming an elaborate urban centre and achieving a significant political and economic status in the region. The modern town of Santiponce overlies the pre-Roman Iberian settlement and part of the well-preserved Roman city.

The Battle of Italica was fought in 75 BC between a rebel army under the command of Lucius Hirtuleius a legate of the Roman rebel Quintus Sertorius and a Roman Republican army under the command of the Roman general and proconsul of Hispania Ulterior Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius. The battle was fought near Italica (a Roman colony in Spain) and ended in a stunning victory for the Metellan army.

The Roman amphitheatre of Italica (Spanish: Anfiteatro romano de Itálica) is a ruined Roman amphitheatre situated in the Roman settlement of Italica, present-day Santiponce, in Andalusia, Spain. It was built during the reign of emperor Hadrian, approximately between the years 117 and 138, and was one of the largest in the entire Roman Empire.

This is the birthplace of actor and dancer Eduardo Cansino Sr., the father of Rita Hayworth. Footballer Miguel Ángel Llera, of Scunthorpe United, was also born here. Castilleja de la Cuesta has a local specialty, the "torta de aceite". This is a thin, crisp baked good made with olive oil and having a hint of anise. They are eaten throughout Spain and exported to many countries.

The Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo (Spanish: monasterio de San Isidoro del Campo) is a monastery located in Santiponce, Spain. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spanish Property of Cultural Interest) in 1872.The monastery was founded in 1301 by Alonso Pérez de Guzmán. The interior houses an altarpiece by Juan Martínez Montañes.
