Portarlington, historically called Cooletoodera (from Irish: Cúil an tSúdaire, meaning 'nook of the tanner'), is a town on the border of County Laois and County Offaly, Ireland. The River Barrow forms the border. The town was recorded in the 2016 census as having a population of 8,368.

Lea Castle is a ruined medieval castle near Portarlington, County Laois. A timber castle was built in the late 12th or early 13th century and replaced by a later stone castle. The remains of the castle mostly date to the 13th century and consist of a four-storey donjon and a gatehouse.The castle was the property of the FitzGerald family, who held the title Earl of Kildare from 1316. The FitzGeralds in the 1290s clashed fiercely with the powerful Richard de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster, and in 1294-5 they held him prisoner in Lea Castle for several months, until Parliament secured his release.

Portarlington GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association gaelic football club in Portarlington, County Laois, Ireland. Portarlington GAA have won 14 Laois Senior Football Championship titles, the most recent of which was in 2021. Famous past players include Steve Allen, Colm Maher, Jim Mangan, Benny Hunt, Peter Murphy, Dermot Murphy, Seamus Hunt, Tom Smith, Adrian Phelan, David Sweeney, Hugh Emerson, Padraig O'Dwyer, Damien Ryan and Evin Bennett. Current players of note include Cathal Ryan who played as a defender for the Laois senior team from 2004 until the end of the 2010/2011 season.

Portarlington station is a railway station on the Dublin-Cork Main Line. It is the branching-off/exchange point for services to Galway, Ballina, and Westport. The Galway/Mayo line diverges at the west end of the station via a single lead junction towards Athlone. The station is situated just outside Portarlington, County Laois, Ireland.The station formerly had a third track between the platforms "the centre or middle road" which was removed in 2005 when the platforms were lengthened and widened in preparation for the introduction of Mk 4 Inter City trains.

Gracefield GAA (Irish: Pairc de Grás) is a Gaelic football and ladies' Gaelic football club in Portarlington, County Offaly, Ireland. Their most notable period was in 1970, when they won the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship.

Walsh Island or Walshisland (Irish: Inis na mBreatnach) is a village in County Offaly, Ireland. It takes its name from the surrounding hinterland which is a fertile area of land on a hill (104m) located in an area of bogland known as the Bog of Allen, (hence, "island"). The village is one kilometre west of the R400 regional road which runs through the bog below. Walsh Island is 12 km from the nearest town, Portarlington. As of the 2016 census, the village had a population of 443 people.

Clonbullogue Airfield is a small Irish airport located about 2 km (1.2 mi) west of Clonbullogue and 6 NM (11 km; 6.9 mi) south of Edenderry in County Offaly, Ireland. It is owned and operated by the Irish Parachute Club which is based at the field. The airfield has one grass runway running east–west which is 770 by 18 m (2,526 by 59 ft). Six aircraft are based at the field, most of them owned by the Irish Parachute Club. There is usually busy parachuting at weekends and public holidays so flying restrictions are enforced around this area.

Killenard (Irish: Coill An Aird, meaning 'the wood of the height') is a village in County Laois, Ireland. It lies in the historic barony of Portnahinch and within the administrative area of Laois County Council.As of the 2016 census, the village had a population of 671 people, up from 622 inhabitants in the 2011 census. Formerly a small village, a number of housing developments were built in the area during the "Celtic Tiger" era.The Heritage Hotel and Golf Resort, located close to the village centre, was built in 2004. The local Roman Catholic (Saint John's) church and Church of Ireland (Lea) church both date from the early 19th century.

Bracknagh or Bracnagh (Irish: Breacánach) is a small village in County Offaly, Ireland. It is at the junction of the R442 and R419 regional roads, halfway between Portarlington and Rathangan (8 km from both). It is thought that the settlement began with a small cluster of homes built around the road junction. Expansion along connected roads included the addition of two housing developments called, "The Ring" and "The Green" by Offaly County Council and Bord na Mona.Due to the nearest postal sorting office being in Kildare, Bracknagh is listed as a Kildare address, though it is in County Offaly.Bracknagh is home to the Ballynowlart church, where the history reports that the congregation were burned alive in the 1600s. Bracknagh is home to St Broughan's Well, the water from which is reputed to be a cure for headaches.Bracknagh has a national school which in the early 2000s received a facelift which combined a new build and the older section of the school. Bracknagh GAA is the local Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club and was founded in 1973. The club were the first team to win the Offaly GAA intermediate title in 1978. Since its establishment and inaugural championship win, Bracknagh GAA have added further Offaly Intermediate titles, a Junior C Championship and Senior B Championship along with several league titles. In 2019, Bracknagh GAA were named the Offaly club of the year. Bracknagh now play at Senior B level.Bracknagh is a small village with a number of small housing estates and a local shop, post office and public house. Bracknagh's catchment area stretches from the Kildare border to the Laois border. During 2021, the Bracknagh community hall was upgraded and is used for a number of community activities.
