Moriches, New York

The Rapid Fire Arena is a skating facility located in Moriches, New York. It is the home of the Suffolk Sting of the Professional Inline Hockey Association Pro Division (PIHA Pro) and the Professional Inline Hockey Association Minor League (PIHAML).

The Poospatuck Reservation is a Native American reservation of the Unkechaugi band in the community of Mastic, Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is one of two Native American reservations in Suffolk County, the other being the Shinnecock Reservation. The population was 436 at the 2020 census. The Unkechaugi are descendants of the Quiripi-speaking Native Americans, who occupied much of southern New England and central Long Island at the time of European encounter in the colonial era. Historically they spoke an Algonquian language. They have retained a community; the reservation is the smallest in New York State. The current 55 acre reservation was originally set aside for the Unkechaugs as a 175-acre plot by William "Tangier" Smith after he purchased large tracts of land from Unkechaug John Mayhew in 1691. It is located in Mastic on the north side of Poospatuck Creek, on the east side of Poospatuck Lane, and south of Eleanor Avenue. Poospatuck is situated in the southeast corner of Suffolk County's present-day Town of Brookhaven; and is the township's sole Indian reservation. On account of the innumerable tobacco shops, the reservation is known synecdochally as "Mastic Boges" by those in neighboring towns. It is about 70 miles or 1½ hours east of New York City. The reservation and its people are recognized as Native American by the state of New York but it has not received federal recognition from the US Bureau of Indian Affairs. However, the Unkechaug established that it met the criteria of a Tribe set out in the Supreme Court case Montoya v. United States, 180 U.S. 261, 266 (1901). The Unkechaug proved beyond a preponderance of the evidence that they met the criteria of a common law definition of a tribe consisting of the following: 1. A body of Indians of the same or similar race; 2. United in a community under one leadership or government; 3. Inhabiting a particular though sometimes ill-defined territory. Federal District Judge Kiyo Matsomoto held that the Unkechaug satisfied all 3 Montoya criteria thereby entitling the Unkechaug to Sovereign Immunity from lawsuits because they are a federal Tribe under federal common law. Mastic was a station stop along the Montauk Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. It was located on the corner of Mastic Road and Mastic Boulevard at the Mastic Road grade crossing, near the Fire Department and Mastic Seafoods.

Mastic is a hamlet and a census-designated place (CDP) in the southeastern part of the town of Brookhaven in central Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 15,481 at the 2010 census.The hamlet was originally called Forge until 1893, when it was changed to the current name of Mastic. The Long Island Rail Road built a station in 1882 and, on July 15, 1960, the stop was moved 7,010 feet (2,140 m) west and renamed Mastic–Shirley. The Poospatuck Indian Reservation lies entirely within the community, near its southern end and along the Forge River. The northernmost section of the hamlet is called Manor Park, which stretches from Sunrise Highway to Moriches-Middle Island Road immediately east of Brookhaven Airport. Part of the neighborhood lies within the hamlet of Shirley, but is served entirely by Mastic's zip code of 11950.

Center Moriches ( moh-RITCH-iz) is a hamlet and census-designated place in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 7,580 at the 2010 census. Center Moriches is in the town of Brookhaven. It is the location of the historic Masury Estate Ballroom and Terry-Ketcham Inn, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.The name Moriches comes from Meritces, a Native American who owned land on Moriches Neck.

Masury Estate Ballroom is a historic ballroom located at Center Moriches in Suffolk County, New York. It was built about 1898 and was originally part of the Masury family estate. It is a long, rambling one story, Shingle Style wood-frame building. It has a "T shaped plan which contains the ballroom in the main upper portion and a bowling alley and billiards room in the long base. The building sits on a brick foundation and features a broad hip roof with hip roof dormers. The estate house was dismantled following the New England Hurricane of 1938, but the ballroom remained in use and is now owned by the Holiday Beach Property Owners Association.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Forge River is a partially mixed estuary on the south shore of Long Island in the township of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York.

The Mary E. Bell House is a historic house at 66 Railroad Avenue approximately 1/10th mile south of the Long Island rail road in Center Moriches, Long Island, New York. Built in 1872 by Selah Smith of Huntington who purchased the land, it is significant in the area of ethnic history for the Smith and Bell families and the African-American AME Zion community of Center Moriches during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. It is under the Stewardship of the Ketcham Inn Foundation.

William Floyd House, also known as Nicoll Floyd House and Old Mastic House, was a home of Founding Father William Floyd, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence, in Mastic Beach, New York. It was his home from 1734 until 1803. This home is distinct from Gen. William Floyd House, his later home in Westernville, New York, that is also on the National Register and which was designated a National Historic Landmark. The two William Floyd houses are believed to be the only surviving homes in New York of signers of the Declaration of Independence. The Mastic home is "reputed to be the best preserved and oldest manor house" in its part of Long Island.It is located about 0.29 miles (0.47 km) south of Washington Avenue and Wavecrest Drive in Mastic Beach. The home was built by Nicoll Floyd, who was William Floyd's father, and was given to William's son, also named Nicoll Floyd. The house was visited by Marquis de Lafayette and others.The house is owned by the National Park Service as part of Fire Island National Seashore, although it's not on Fire Island itself.

WSVV-LP (100.9 FM) is a defunct low-power FM radio station formerly licensed to Center Moriches, New York. The station was silent and its license was set to expire on July 2, 2013, if they did not resume operations. It resumed operations on June 27, 2013.WSVV-LP again went silent on June 8, 2014. On July 21, 2015, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wrote the station to advise that their license was considered expired effective June 9, 2015, due to the station having remained silent for more than twelve months. The station's call sign was deleted from the FCC's database on September 2, 2015.

Terry-Ketcham Inn is a historic inn and tavern located at Center Moriches in Suffolk County, New York. It was built about 1693, expanded about 1710 and 1790, and is a two-story, nine-bay by two-bay frame structure with a rear wing and gable roof. The original structure was built as a two-bay by three-bay, single-story timber-frame cottage. In about 1710 a three-bay by two-bay timber frame half-house was built to the north of the original structure. A 1790 building program tripled the size of the structure.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993, and is protected by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. A historic barn behind the inn is used to sell books, records, and compact discs in order to raise funds for the Ketcham Inn Foundation.
