WBHM (90.3 MHz) is a non-commercial public FM radio station in Birmingham, Alabama. The station is licensed to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where it maintains its radio studios on 11th Street South. WBHM features programming from National Public Radio, American Public Media and Public Radio Exchange. On weekdays, it carries news and information programming, with classical music heard late nights, seven days a week. Weekend programming includes public radio shows such as Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, On The Media, The Moth Radio Hour and Travel with Rick Steves, as well as Bluegrass music and New Age music. WBHM has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 32,000 watts. The transmitter is in Vulcan Park, amid towers for other Birmingham-area FM and TV stations. It broadcasts using HD Radio technology. On a digital subchannel, it operates the Alabama Radio Reading Service for blind and visually impaired listeners. Articles from the Birmingham News and popular magazines are read on the service. WBHM programming is also heard on 99 watt FM translator W291DC at 106.1 MHz in Birmingham.

WVTM-TV (channel 13) is a television station in Birmingham, Alabama, United States, affiliated with NBC. Owned by Hearst Television, the station maintains studios and transmitter facilities atop Red Mountain, between Vulcan Trail and Valley View Drive in southeastern Birmingham, adjacent to the Vulcan Statue and next to the studios of Fox affiliate WBRC (channel 6).

The Vulcan statue is the largest cast iron statue in the world, and is the city symbol of Birmingham, Alabama, reflecting its roots in the iron and steel industry. The 56-foot (17 m) tall statue depicts the Roman god Vulcan, god of the fire and forge, with ironworking equipment. It was created as Birmingham's entry for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904 World's Fair) in St. Louis, Missouri. While it is the world's largest made of iron, it is also among the nation's tallest statues of any kind.

The Anderson Place Historic District, in Birmingham, Alabama, is a residential historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, and the listing was expanded in 1991. The houses date from 1907 to 1912 and include Tudor Revival, Queen Anne, and Bungalow/Craftsman architecture.The district originally included 89 contributing buildings on 23 acres (9.3 ha).The original area is roughly bounded by Fourteenth Ave. S, Eighteenth St. S, Sixteen Ave. S, and Fifteenth St. S. It includes work by architect D.O. Whilldin and others.The increase added 35 contributing buildings on 14 acres (5.7 ha) and included additional Tudor Revival and Bungalow/craftsman architecture, as well as Colonial Revival architecture. The increase area is roughly bounded by 16th Ave. S. from 15th St. to a line S from 18th St.

The Jefferson County School System is the second-largest public school system in Alabama, United States. It is the third oldest school system in Jefferson County preceded only by the Birmingham and Bessemer School Systems. The Jefferson County School System was created in 1896, and initially served all unincorporated communities and cities in the county other than Birmingham and Bessemer. Beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s various other cities began to establish their own separate systems (i.e., Homewood, Midfield, Vestavia Hills, Hoover, etc.). Today the County system serves students in those unincorporated areas of Jefferson County, Alabama such as Alliance, Bagley, Concord, Corner, Forestdale, McCalla, Minor, Mt. Olive, and Oak Grove. It also includes students who reside in the cities of Adamsville, Clay, Fultondale, Gardendale, Graysville, Hueytown, Irondale, Kimberly, Morris, Pinson, Pleasant Grove, and Warrior among others. The Rosedale Historic District in Homewood, Alabama is a historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. The listing included 143 contributing buildings on 250 acres (1.0 km2). Another part of the Rosedale Neighborhood is included in the NRHP as Rosedale Park Historic District (Homewood, Alabama). It is a hilly residential neighborhood, located somewhat inaccessibly over Red Mountain ridge, from Birmingham, Alabama. Developers could not develop the property for white families, but the lack of transportation options did not dissuade black families, with less choices, from choosing to live there. It grew as a working and middle class African American neighborhood. It was surrounded by white suburbs and not allowed to expand. It has many of "the best examples of working and middle class architecture, including residential/domestic, commercial, and religious, built c. late 1880s-1953 by and for African Americans in Jefferson County and the State of Alabama. Vernacular residential styles include many shotgun houses, particularly the concentration that remains on Loveless Street as well as a variety of bungalows and duplexes."The history of the Rosedale Neighborhood has been documented by several local history projects by students and faculty from Samford University.

Red Mountain is a long ridge running southwest-northeast and dividing Jones Valley from Shades Valley south of Birmingham, Alabama. It is part of the Ridge-and-Valley region of the Appalachian mountains. The Red Mountain Formation of hard Silurian rock strata lies exposed in several long crests, and was named "Red Mountain" because of the rust-stained rock faces and prominent seams of red hematite iron ore. The mountain was the site of the Sloss, Republic Steel, Woodward Iron and Tennessee Coal and iron mines which supplied ore to Birmingham's iron furnaces. The best displays of the mountain's geological strata occur at the Twentieth Street cut near the Vulcan statue and at the U.S. Route 31 highway cut leading into the suburb of Homewood. Most of Birmingham's television and radio stations have their transmission towers located on Red Mountain. Red Mountain is also home to Red Mountain Park, one of the largest urban parks in the United States at 1,500 acres (6.1 km2).

WPXH-TV (channel 44) is a television station licensed to Hoover, Alabama, United States, serving the Birmingham area as an affiliate of Ion Television. The station is owned by Inyo Broadcast Holdings, and maintains offices on Golden Crest Drive in Birmingham and a transmitter atop Red Mountain, near the city's southern edge.

WBHK (98.7 FM) is an urban adult contemporary music formatted radio station owned by SummitMedia that serves Birmingham, Alabama. It is currently ranked by the Arbitron rating system as the nation's highest rated urban adult contemporary station. 98.7 Kiss FM is licensed to Warrior and broadcasts on the 98.7 Megahertz (MHz) frequency at effective radiated power of 39 kilowatts (kW) from atop Red Mountain. It is owned by SummitMedia along with six other stations, and all share studios in the Cahaba neighborhood in far southeast Birmingham.The station has an unusually strong signal that broadcasts on a class C1 that can be heard across the majority of North and Central Alabama and even in parts of eastern Mississippi and western Georgia. WBHK is sometimes mistaken for or confused with the former New York City urban AC with the same moniker, WRKS-FM, 98.7 Kiss FM (now WEPN-FM with an ESPN sports format). The similar musical format and dial position of both stations have allowed them to share on-air liners and even TV commercials—but neither station shares the same corporate ownership. In 2005, WBHK began broadcasting in IBOC digital radio, using the HD Radio system from iBiquity.

WUHT (107.7 FM, "Hot 107.7") is an urban adult contemporary radio station that serves the Birmingham, Alabama, area. The station is also the flagship station of the UAB Blazers Radio Network which had previously been heard on sister station WWMM. Owned by Cumulus Media, the station has studios in Homewood and its transmitter is atop Red Mountain.

WZZK-FM (104.7 FM) is a country music-formatted radio station licensed to Birmingham that serves northern and central Alabama. As of January 3, 2007, WZZK-FM is the flagship station of the Rick and Bubba radio network. It was the first FM station in Birmingham to switch to country music, and throughout much of the 1980s and 1990s was the top-rated radio station in Birmingham. The station is owned by SummitMedia alongside six other stations, and all share studios in the Cahaba neighborhood in far southeastern Birmingham. Its transmitter is located atop Red Mountain in Birmingham.

WERC-FM (105.5 MHz) is a commercial radio station licensed to Hoover, Alabama, and serving Greater Birmingham. It is owned by iHeartMedia and it simulcasts a talk radio format with sister station WERC 960 AM. The studios and offices are in Beacon Ridge Tower on First Avenue South in Birmingham, off Interstate 65. WERC-FM has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 29,500 watts. The transmitter is atop Red Mountain, off Valley Avenue in Birmingham. WERC-FM broadcasts using HD Radio technology. Its digital subchannels carry urban gospel and urban adult contemporary formats, which in turn feed two FM translators.
