South Bethany, Delaware

The Dinker-Irvin House is a historic house at 310 Garfield Parkway Extended in Bethany Beach, Delaware. Built in 1904 by William A. Dinker, it is one of the oldest early 20th-century summer cottages in the community. Between 1922 and 1925 it served as the community post office, and is the only public-use building from that era to survive. It has twice been moved, once over a property dispute, and in 2007 due to road works. The house has been acquired by the city, with plans to convert it into a museum.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.

Bethany Beach is an incorporated town in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. According to the 2010 Census Bureau figures, the population of the town is 1,060; however, during the summer months some 15,000 more populate the town as vacationers. It is part of the Salisbury, MD-DE Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bethany Beach, South Bethany and Fenwick Island are popularly known as "The Quiet Resorts". Contributing to Bethany Beach's reputation as a "quiet" place is the presence of Delaware Seashore State Park immediately to the north of the town. Despite its small size, Bethany Beach contains the usual attractions of a summer seaside resort, including the short Joseph Olson Boardwalk, a broad, sandy beach, motels, restaurants, and vacation homes. Because Bethany Beach does not sit on a barrier island, residential areas continue some distance to the west of the town's limits.

Cotton Patch Hills is a community in Bethany Beach, Delaware. Cotton Patch Hills derives its name from the cotton flotsam which spread over the shore dunes after a Spanish merchant vessel ran aground in the 1700s. The vessel contained animal hides, furs, horses, ivory, two elephants, and a giraffe calve.

The Assawoman Canal is a canal in Sussex County, Delaware. The canal links the Indian River Bay to the north with the Little Assawoman Bay to the south. It is bordered by Bethany Beach and South Bethany to the east and Ocean View to the west. Because of it, Fenwick Island is detached from the Delaware mainland. First proposed in 1884, the Assawoman Canal was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1891 for the purpose of moving goods by boat without having to travel into the Atlantic Ocean. The canal was initially dug by hand in the 1890s by immigrant labor. The canal was not dredged from the 1950s until 2006. By the early 2000s, it was no longer deep enough to handle the boat traffic that once passed through it when it was part of the Intracoastal Waterway. From 2006 to 2010, the state undertook a dredging project that restored the canal to navigability, with a channel width of 35 feet (11 m) and a depth of 3 feet (0.91 m).

Assawoman Wildlife Area is a state wildlife area located in Sussex County, Delaware located near Frankfort, Delaware and Little Assawoman Bay. It is made up of three large tracts of land that total 3,100 acres (1,300 ha) that were originally former farms that were lost due to the Great Depression, and managed by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). The wildlife areas name came from the nearby Little Assawoman Bay which was originally named Assateague, an Algonkian word meaning "stream or inlet in the middle" before it was changed to another Algonkian name which means "midway fishing stream."In 2019, fifty-two areas were purchased alongside the Piney Point tract of the wildlife area by a joint effort by the Center for the Inland Bays and the DNREC's program the Delaware Open Space Program. The additional land expanded the wildlife area by 11% and another joint program between the Center for the Inland Bays and the Division of Fish and Wildlife planted 16,600 trees on sixteen of the fifty-two areas. The reforestation effort by the state was done to protect and support breeding populations of local animals such as the eastern box turtle and migratory species like the wood thrush, and to improve water quality in the Indian River. Additional conservation efforts were made by creating a living shoreline with salt marsh grasses to create a 13,000 sq ft (1,200 m2) separation between a freshwater pond and a saltwater tributary. In 2020, it was reported that the Delmarva fox squirrel would be transplanted into the wildlife area from Dorchester County, Maryland in an effort to increase the population in Delaware. Prior to this transplant the squirrel was only seen in the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge and the Naticoke Wildlife Area.

Sussex Shores is an unincorporated community in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. Sussex Shores is located along the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Route 1, north of Bethany Beach and south of Delaware Seashore State Park. Sussex Shores was built in the 1950s and was the first of several developments built to the north of Bethany Beach.

Fenwick Island State Park is a 344-acre (139 ha) Delaware state park between Ocean City, Maryland and South Bethany, Delaware in Sussex County, Delaware, US. Fenwick Island State Park is open for year-round recreation from 8:00 am until sunset. Originally part of Delaware Seashore State Park, it was established in 1966 and renamed in 1981. The park is located on Fenwick Island, a narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and Little Assawoman Bay. It is largely undeveloped in comparison to the beach communities that surround it.

Little Assawoman Bay is a body of water in Sussex County, Delaware. It is connected from Assawoman Bay to the south by a narrow canal known locally as "The Ditch," and is connected to Indian River Bay to the north by the Assawoman Canal. It is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the Fenwick Island barrier spit.

Ocean View is a town in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. The population was 1,882 at the 2010 census, an increase of 87.1% over the previous decade. It is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area and lies in Baltimore Hundred. Ocean View is fast becoming a bedroom community for the neighboring summer resort of Bethany Beach.

The Evans–West House is a historic house at 40 West Avenue (corner of Oakwood) in Ocean View, Delaware. It is a 2+1⁄2-story L-shaped wood-frame house, with clapboard siding, a cross-gable roof configuration, and a brick foundation. Its front, facing north toward Oakwood Avenue, is three bays wide, with a single-story hip-roofed porch extending across most of its width, supported by turned columns. The gable at the center of the roof has a pointed window at its center. The house, built 1900–04, is noted for a particularly well-preserved interior, with original floors, porcelain kitchen sink, and etched glass pane in the front door. The property is owned by the Ocean View Historical Society.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

The Tunnell–West House is a historic house at 39 Central Avenue in Ocean View, Delaware. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built sometime between 1868 and 1890, and is a distinctive local example of vernacular Gothic Revival style. Elements of the building's interior are particularly well preserved, including door hardware and trim elements. The local historical society is adapting the house for use as a museum.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
