Lough Mask

Toormakeady or Tourmakeady (Irish: Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, the official name) is a Gaeltacht in south County Mayo in the west of Ireland. It is located between the shores of Lough Mask and the Partry Mountains, and covers 172.26 square kilometres (66.51 sq mi). As at the time of the 2011 census, Toormakeady had a total population of 1,007, having dropped from 1,150 in 1991. Toormakeady is also the name of the principal village in the area. Those parts of Ballinchalla Electoral District in Toormakeady and the whole of the Owenbrin Electoral District in Toormakeady together comprise nearly half of the land area of Toormakeady and were previously parts of County Galway. In 1898 they were transferred to County Mayo. From the time of the Great Famine of the mid-1840s onwards, the Toormakeady area has experienced a high level of emigration. Many descendants of emigrants return every year to find their roots. The genealogical records for this area have been computerised at the South Mayo Family Research Centre in nearby Ballinrobe to make the task of tracing roots easier. On 3 May 1921, during the Irish War of Independence the Irish Republican Army south Mayo flying column of around 30 men together with a small number of men from east Mayo mounted an ambush at Toormakeady. The events of this day have been written about in Donal Buckley's book The Battle of Tourmakeady.The English actor Robert Shaw, best known for his work in From Russia with Love, Jaws and The Sting, lived in Drimbawn House, Toormakeady until his death in 1978. Television producer Máire Ní Thuathail was born in Toormakeady in 1959.The local sport clubs in Toormakeady include, CLG Thuar Mhic Éadaigh and Partry Athletic Football Club.

The River Robe (Irish: Abhainn an Róba) is a river in County Mayo, Ireland. It rises near Ballyhaunis, then flows generally west for 64 kilometres (40 mi), where it drains into Lough Mask.The river's name in Irish is An Róba, first recorded as Rodba in mediaeval manuscripts, perhaps from Old Irish rodba, "sharp, aggressive".The river is the longest tributary of Lough Mask and it drains 320 square kilometres of south Mayo.The Robe's Environmental Protection Agency River ID is 30_1579.

The Ballymaglancy cave (Irish: Uaimh Bhaile Mhic Fhlannchaidh) Special Area of Conservation is a linear stream cave and Natura 2000 site in County Galway, close to the town of Cong. The site qualifies for Special Area of Conservation status under two related criteria: the presence of the lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros) and the presence of caves not open to the public.

An Fhairche (locally An Fháirthí), or Clonbur in English, is a Gaeltacht village in Connemara, County Galway, Ireland. The village of Clonbur sits between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask. Two kilometres to the west rises Mount Gable where, according to legend, the hordes of Firbolg gathered on the hilltop before their clash with the Tuatha Dé Danann at the Battle of Moytura. Clonbur also contains the ruins of the Petersburg Estate, seat of the Lynch family. In more recent times, it was owned by the Guinness family. The house and yard buildings have been completely renovated and now function as an Outdoor Education Centre.

Eochy's Cairn is a cairn and National Monument located in County Mayo, Ireland.

The Quiet Man Cottage Museum is a museum located in Cong, County Mayo, Ireland. It is a replica of the cottage used in John Ford's 1951 film The Quiet Man starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara and Barry Fitzgerald. It is typical of the Irish cottage of the 1820s featuring a thatched roof with an emerald green half door and whitewashed facade.The ground floor of the "'White-o-Morn' Cottage" has been reproduced as an identical replica of the original Hollywood film set. Much care was taken to accurately replicate the furnishings, artifacts and costumes on display. These items include the table and chairs, and four-poster bed, so appreciated by Mary Kate Danaher, the character played by Maureen O'Hara.The museum houses a large collection of newspaper cuttings from 1951 that recount what life was like when Hollywood descended on Cong. The costumes on display were made by the same company who made the original ones for the film: O'Maille's of Galway.

Cong Abbey also known as the Royal Abbey of Cong, is a historic site located at Cong, County Mayo, in Ireland's province of Connacht. The ruins of the former Augustinian abbey mostly date to the 13th century and have been described as featuring some of finest examples of medieval ecclesiastical architecture in Ireland.

It is near Cong on the County Mayo–Galway border, on the County Galway side of Lough Corrib, in Ireland. It is a member of the Red Carnation Hotels organisation and was previously owned by the Guinness family.

Ballinrobe Racecourse is a horse racing venue in Ballinrobe, County Mayo, Ireland. It is the only race course in County Mayo, and hosts both flat and national hunt events.
