Caradon Hill

The Caradon Hill transmitting station is a broadcasting and telecommunications facility on Bodmin Moor in the civil parish of Linkinhorne, located on Caradon Hill, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Liskeard, and 3⁄4 mile (1.2 km) south-east of Minions, the highest village in Cornwall (grid reference SX273707). Built in 1961, the station includes a 237.7 metres (780 ft) guyed steel lattice mast. The mean height for the television antennas is 603 metres (1,978 ft) above sea level. The site has a smaller towers used for telecommunications and a wireless internet signal. It is owned and operated by Arqiva. The South Caradon Copper Mine, 1,000 yards (0.91 km) to the SW of the transmitter, was the largest copper mine in the UK in its heyday, 150 years ago. Many other copper, tin and granite mines are scattered around the base of the hill.

Upton is situated at grid reference SX 279 724 north of Upton Cross 5 miles (8 kilometres) northwest of Callington. They are on the northeast side of Caradon Hill on the B3254 Liskeard to Launceston road. St Paul's Church at Upton Cross is a mission church built in this corner of the parish of Linkinhorne in 1887 to serve the needs of the local mining community. The area is served by Upton Cross Academy, a primary school and pre-school. The school is part of Kernow Learning, a multi academy trust of schools in Cornwall. A little further north are the hamlets of Darleyford and North Darley below Notter Tor and a remarkable tree, the Darley Oak. At Netherton Farm Yarg cheese was produced from 1984 to 2006 by Lynher Dairies. Cornish Blue, a cheese made by the Cornish Cheese Company at Upton Cross, was the winning cheese in the World Food Awards in December 2010. The Hurlers are a group of three stone circles some distance to the west.

Minions (Cornish: Menyon) is a village in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated on the eastern flank of Bodmin Moor northwest of Caradon Hill approximately four miles (6 km) north of Liskeard. Minions is first recorded in 1613 and its meaning is unknown. A stone circle known as the Hurlers is located on the west side of the village. Several other tumuli are also in the area, including Rillaton round barrow, where a Bronze Age gold beaker was discovered. The Cheesewring, a distinctive rock formation, is a mile northwest. The village has embraced the coincidence that its name is now shared with the characters from the Despicable Me franchise.

Phoenix United Mine is a disused 19th century copper and tin mine in Cornwall, England, UK. Heavy metals left over in the soil from the mining operations have allowed mosses and lichens to flourish, and today the site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), noted for its biological characteristics. All of the land designated as Phoenix United Mine SSSI is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall.

Crow's Nest is a village in Cornwall, England. It is located within the civil parish of St Cleer, on the southeastern edge of Bodmin Moor, 3 miles (4.8 km) north of the town of Liskeard. A Site of Special Scientific Interest, also named Crow's Nest, is located 200m north of the village. It is noted for its geological interest, as well as various species of moss, specifically for being one of only two sites in the world where Cornish path moss (Ditrichum cornubicum) grows, a distinction it shares with the Phoenix United Mine, also located in Cornwall. The SSSI also forms part of Phoenix United Mine and Crow's Nest Special Area of Conservation. Part of the land designated as Crow's Nest Site of Special Scientific Interest is owned by the Ministry of Defence.

Rillaton Barrow (Cornish: Krug Reslegh) is a Bronze Age round barrow in Cornwall, UK. The site is on the eastern flank of Bodmin Moor in the parish of Linkinhorne about four miles (6 km) north of Liskeard. Rillaton Barrow was excavated in 1837 and found to contain a centrally-placed inhumation beneath the 25m wide barrow. The burial had been placed in a stone cist measuring 2m by almost 1m. Human remains were found along with grave goods including the Rillaton Gold Cup, a bronze dagger, beads, pottery, glass and other items.

The Hurlers (Cornish: An Hurlysi) is a group of three stone circles in the civil parish of St Cleer, Cornwall, England, UK. The site is half-a-mile (0.8 km) west of the village of Minions on the eastern flank of Bodmin Moor, and approximately four miles (6 km) north of Liskeard.

The Darley Oak is a Pedunculate oak tree (Quercus robur) which grows near Darleyford in the parish of Linkinhorne on the edge of Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, England, UK. This ancient tree is thought to be at least 1,000 years old, and a considerable number of legends take it as their core. Folk tradition attributes healing properties to the tree, and it is said that any wish made to it will eventually come true. Its acorns are also used as amulets, and were once used by pregnant women during pregnancy, to bring them luck. It was chosen one of the 50 Great British Trees by The Tree Council in 2002.
