Ault Park (Ontario)

Moulinette is an underwater ghost town in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is one of Ontario's Lost Villages, which were permanently flooded by the creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1958. Families and businesses in Moulinette were moved to the new town of Long Sault before the seaway construction commenced. The village was located as a strip community along Highway 2, on the St. Lawrence River. At the time of the flooding, Moulinette had a population of around 311 residents. The community would have been located in what is now South Stormont township. Moulinette was settled in the late 1700s by United Empire Loyalists of the King's Royal Regiment from New York. In the nineteenth century many pioneer industries and businesses were established in the village. The origin of the name Moulinette is disputed; it is thought to have originated either from the French term for "little mill" as a reference to the many mills located in the village or from the French word "moulinet", meaning reel or winch as a reference to French ships who navigated the nearby rapids using winches.

Sheek Island is an island in the St. Lawrence River in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is considered to be one of Ontario's Lost Villages, which were permanently flooded by the creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1958. While much of the island has been flooded, a portion of it remains above water, but is not populated. Sheek Island was occupied primarily by family farms and recreational properties. In 1914, Levi Addison Ault donated a family property on the island to the Township of Cornwall, which became Ault Park. After the island was flooded by the Seaway project, Ault Park was rebuilt on the new shoreline near Long Sault. From 1956 to 1958, archaeologists conducted excavations in Ault Park, and believed that they may have found remnants of a 3500-year old native village. The University of Toronto petitioned for an injunction against the Seaway project so that the excavations could continue, but were not successful. A number of artifacts were taken from the site for further study.

Mille Roches is an underwater ghost town in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is one of Ontario's Lost Villages, which were permanently flooded by the creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1958. Families and businesses in Mille Roches were moved to the new town of Long Sault before the seaway construction commenced. Mille Roches was the birthplace of Levi Addison Ault, born into a well-known and established family in the town, who moved to Cincinnati, Ohio as an adult and became a successful businessman and the city's commissioner of parks in the early 1900s. Ault also donated a large parcel of family-owned land on Sheek's Island, which became Ault Park.

Long Sault was a rapid in the St. Lawrence River upstream and west of Cornwall, Ontario. Sault is the archaic spelling of the French word saut, meaning rapids. The Long Sault created a navigation barrier along the river for much of its history, motivating the construction of the Moses-Saunders Power Dam, part of the St. Lawrence Seaway, in the 1950s as the size of ships and the volume of shipping traffic along the river began to exceed the capacity of the area's canal locks. The construction required the flooding of a large swath of land near the rapids to facilitate a hydroelectric dam and to make the rapids area more navigable. The flooded region includes Ontario's Lost Villages. The Long Sault Parkway takes its name from the rapids.

Robert Moses State Park – Thousand Islands is a 2,322-acre (9.40 km2) state park located on Barnhart Island in the Saint Lawrence River and the adjacent mainland in the Town of Massena in St. Lawrence County, New York. The park is north of the Village of Massena, near the Canada–US border. The park is named after former New York Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, who created many of the state parks in New York. It is one of two state parks in New York to bear his name. The other, Robert Moses State Park - Long Island, is in southern New York on Fire Island.

Maple Grove is an underwater ghost town in the Canadian province of Ontario. It is one of Ontario's Lost Villages, which were permanently flooded by the creation of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1958. Families and businesses in Maple Grove were moved by Ontario Hydro to the new town of Long Sault before the seaway construction commenced. On August 10, 1954, prime minister Louis St. Laurent, premier Leslie Frost and various U.S. officials turned the first shovelful of earth in Maple Grove. Jeremiah French came from Vermont and arrived at Maple Grove in 1784. He started out with nothing more than a tiny settlers' cottage which over time expanded into a huge flour and saw mills operation.

Black River is an unincorporated Dispersed Rural Community in the municipality of South Stormont, United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry in eastern Ontario, Canada. It is located about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) north of Ontario Highway 401 and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) northeast of the community of Long Sault, and is on the Raisin River.

The Wiley-Dondero Canal is a section of the St. Lawrence Seaway in New York, United States, with a length of 8 nautical miles (15 km; 9.2 mi). The United States Army Corps of Engineers planned and supervised the Wiley-Dondero Canal to bypass the Long Sault. Actual construction was performed by Peter Kiewit Sons Co., Morrison-Knudsen Co., Perini Corp., Utah Construction Co., and Walsh Construction Co. Located near Massena, New York, the seaway provides a total lift of 83 feet (25 m) from the Eisenhower Lock and the Bertrand H. Snell Lock, which are the two locks in the canal. Originally known as the Long Sault Canal, it was later renamed the Wiley-Dondero Canal. Construction was complicated by the need to avoid interrupting the waterflow to nearby hydroelectric installations.

The Eisenhower Lock is one of the seven canal locks on the St Lawrence River leg of the St Lawrence Seaway. This lock provides a 38 foot lift for ships heading upstream. It is one of two locks located near Massena, New York. The lock was constructed to bypass the portion of the St Lawrence River known as the Long Sault. The US Army Corps of Engineers planned and supervised the construction. Actual construction was performed by Peter Kiewit Sons Co., Morrison-Knudsen Co., Perini Corp., Utah Construction Co., and Walsh Construction Co. The lock was originally named the "Robinson Bay Lock" and was renamed after President Dwight Eisenhower after his term was over. The lock, and the nearby Bertrand H. Snell Lock are part of the Wiley-Dondero Canal. Construction was complicated by the need to not interrupt the waterflow to nearby hydro-electric installations. The St. Lawrence Seaway was dedicated on 26 June 1959 at a ceremony in Montreal. Key speakers were President Dwight Eisenhower and Queen Elizabeth II. The following day there was a second dedication ceremony at the Eisenhower Lock. Key attendees were Queen Elizabeth II, Vice President Richard Nixon and New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. In 1972 a tanker, the MV Venus, exploded while transiting the lock. On June 18, 2015, the cruise ship Saint Laurent collided with the lock, causing it to be drained, and closed for almost two days.

The Bertrand H. Snell Lock is situated on the St Lawrence River leg of the St Lawrence Seaway and is one of the seven canal locks found along the length of the seaway. The lock has a 45 ft (14 m) lift for ships traveling upstream. It is situated near Massena, New York along with one of the other locks. The lock was constructed parallel to the portion of the St Lawrence River known as the "Long Sault". The US Army Corps of Engineers planned and supervised the construction. Actual construction was performed by Peter Kiewit Sons Co., Morrison-Knudsen Co., Perini Corp., Utah Construction Co., and Walsh Construction Co. The lock was originally named the "Grasse River Lock" and was renamed after Bertrand Snell after his death. The lock, and the nearby Eisenhower Lock are part of the Wiley-Dondero Canal. Construction was complicated by the need to not interrupt the waterflow to nearby hydro-electric installations.

The Cornwall Motor Speedway is a 1/4 mile dirt track near the community of Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. It is located northwest of the city on Cornwall Centre Road. The track opened in 1970 and runs weekly racing on Sunday evenings. Weekly race classes include modified, sportsman, pro stock, semi pro and mini stock. Yearly special event shows feature the Big Block Modifieds, sprint cars and late models.

The Moses-Saunders Power Dam, short for Robert Moses-Robert H. Saunders Power Dam, is a dam on the Saint Lawrence River straddling the border between the United States and Canada. It is located between Massena in New York and Cornwall in Ontario. The dam supplies water to two adjacent hydroelectric power generating stations, the United States' 912 MW St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project and Canada's 1,045 MW R.H. Saunders Generating Station. Constructed between 1954 and 1958 as part of the larger Saint Lawrence Seaway project, the dam created Lake St. Lawrence. Aside from providing significant amounts of renewable power, the dam regulates the St. Lawrence River and affords passage for the navigation of large vessels. Despite the enormous economic advantages to the dam, it required the relocation of 6,500 people and caused harm to the surrounding environment. Efforts have been made over the years to improve shoreline and fish habitats. The dam regulates the level of Lake Ontario.
