Magilligan

HM Prison Magilligan is a medium security prison run by the Northern Ireland Prison Service situated near Limavady, County Londonderry. It was first opened in January 1972 when 50 Irish Republican internees were transferred from the prison ship HMS Maidstone. The camp was comprised eight Nissen huts on the site of an army camp. The prison was divided into compounds to house the various paramilitary internees and was manned by British Army dog handlers and prison staff on detached duty from Scotland, England and Wales as well as some staff from Northern Ireland. The temporary accommodation was later replaced by three H-blocks similar to those at the Maze prison each containing 100 cells. In 1976 the prison wall was built and the prison began to house other prisoners who had been convicted of non-terrorist offences as well some young prisoners including Borstal trainees. In 1977 the trainees were transferred to Woburn House in Millisle and prisoners convicted of scheduled terrorist offences transferred to the Maze. This left Magilligan operating as a 'normal' prison in the context of Northern Ireland prisons. The regime was consequently developed to reflect this. The prison currently has a Certified Normal Accommodation capacity of 568 prisoners. It is a medium to low security prison that held male prisoners who have six years or less to serve and who meet the relevant security classification. In fact, in 2017 Magilligan Prison proved to be the best performing jail in Northern Ireland according to an unannounced inspection by the Criminal Justice Inspection Northern Ireland (CJI) and her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons in England & Wales (HMIP).

Ballyscullion (from Irish Baile Uí Scuillín 'Ó Scullín's townland') is a small village and civil parish in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 291 people. The civil parish of Ballyscullion covers areas of County Antrim as well as County Londonderry. The village is situated within Mid-Ulster District.

Saint Aidan's GAC Magilligan (Irish: CLG Naomh Aodhán Ard Mhic Giollagain) is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Magilligan, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The club is a member of Derry GAA and currently caters for Gaelic football. Magilligan has won the Derry Junior Football Championship twice. Underage teams up to U-12's play in North Derry GAA league and championships, from U-14 upwards teams compete in All-Derry competitions.

Bellarena railway station serves the village of Bellarena and the broader Limavady area in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The current two-platform station was opened in 2016, replacing the original single-platform 1853 station located on the opposite side of the nearby level crossing.

Magilligan railway station served the area of Magilligan in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland. The Londonderry and Coleraine Railway opened the station on 1 November 1853. A station building was erected between 1873 and 1875 to designs by the architect John Lanyon.A very short-lived horse-drawn tram operated from this station to Magilligan Point in 1855. Towards the end of the station's life, it was used for prison visits to the nearby HMP Magilligan. It closed on 17 October 1976.

Benone is a popular tourist destination in the Causeway Coast and Glens district, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Benone has several caravan sites, such as Golden Sands, Deighans' and a leisure complex with excellent facilities, including a 9-hole golf course (all par 3) and numerous tennis courts. A short walk leads to Benone Strand, seven miles of beach and sand dunes on the north coast of Northern Ireland between Castlerock and the Magilligan peninsula, most of the distance between the mouth of the River Bann and Lough Foyle. It is one of the longest beaches in Northern Ireland, and recipient of the European Blue Flag and Seaside Award.

Moville (moh-VIL; Irish: Bun an Phobail) is a coastal town located on the Inishowen Peninsula of County Donegal, Ireland, close to the northern tip of the island of Ireland. It is the first coastal town of the Wild Atlantic Way when starting on the northern end.

Roe Estuary Nature Reserve is a protected area in Aghanloo, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It is located at the southeast bank of Lough Foyle at the mouth of the River Roe, roughly 6 km north of the market town of Limavady. The estuary is home to numerous migrating bird species. Wading birds as well as ducks, swans and geese are also found in this area. Species of birds include the curlew, lapwing turnstone, bar-tailed godwit and brent goose. In this area of salt marsh and mudflats live small marine animals such as mussels, periwinkles, lugworms, shrimps, and ragworms. There are large areas of eel grass. Salmon pass through this estuary for access between the River Roe and Lough Foyle. Otters have also been sighted in this estuary. The Coleraine–Portrush railway line crosses the estuary going from Londonderry railway station in Derry to Coleraine railway station further north.

Binevenagh (from Irish Binn Fhoibhne, meaning 'Foibhne's peak') is a large, steep-sided hill in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It is part of the Keenaght Hills, which mark the western edge of the Antrim Plateau, formed around 60 million years ago by molten lava. Binevenagh and its cliffs overlook the Magilligan peninsula and dominate the skyline over the villages of Bellarena, Downhill, Castlerock and Benone beach. The area has been classified as both an Area of Special Scientific Interest and as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The total area of the AONB is 138 km². The Bishop's Road, named after the Bishop of Derry, extends across the plateau. Notable features include the Mussenden Temple and a cliff top viewing area on the Bishop's Road giving good views over Lough Foyle and across Inishowen in County Donegal.

Downhill Strand (better known as Benone Strand) is a beach in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. At 7 miles (11 km) long it is one of the longest in Northern Ireland, and recipient of the European Blue Flag and Seaside Award.It is located next to the A2 road, and the Derry to Coleraine section of the Belfast–Derry railway line. Mussenden Temple and the village of Downhill are located at the eastern end of Benone Strand.

Umbra railway station served the Umbra nature reserve near Downhill in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. The Londonderry and Coleraine Railway opened the station in 1855.It served only as a request stop for its short lifetime, and closed in 1861.

Limavady transmitting station is a television and radio transmitter situated near the town of Limavady, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It is owned and operated by Arqiva. The Limavady transmitter was brought into service on Monday 1 December 1975, to provide UHF colour television to the North West of Northern Ireland, transmitting BBC One Northern Ireland, BBC Two Northern Ireland and Ulster Television. Channel 4 would be added to the transmitter in August 1983. A UHF relay of the transmitter was also opened on Monday 1 December 1975 at the Londonderry transmitter, which had been transmitting BBC Television (later renamed BBC One) on VHF since it commenced transmissions on Wednesday 18 December 1957.
