Brighton is a city near Birmingham, Alabama, United States and located just east of Hueytown. At the 2020 census, the population was 2,337. It is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area, which in 2010 had a population of about 1,128,047, approximately one-quarter of Alabama's population. It is one of four cities in Jefferson County named after cities in Great Britain. Many of the city's early settlers were of English descent; they named the town after the English tourist and resort city of Brighton, which is located on the English Channel.

Paul William Dunbar High School, originally Bessemer Colored High School, was a public school for African-American students which operated in Bessemer, Alabama from 1923 to 1980. It served grades 1 through 12 when it opened, and its first graduating class matriculated in 1927 under principal J. B. Bickerstaff. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 18, 2011.

Midfield High School is a four-year public high school located in Midfield, Alabama, United States, a suburb of Birmingham. It is the only high school in the Midfield City School District. School colors are red, white, and blue, and the athletic teams are called the Patriots. Midfield competes in AHSAA Class 3A athletics.

The Sloss Mines are a group of mines in southwestern Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. They were established by the Sloss Iron and Steel Company and its successor, the Sloss-Sheffield Iron and Steel Company, on the southern end of Red Mountain. The Sloss Iron and Steel Company itself was founded by James Sloss in 1881 as the Sloss Furnace Company. The Sloss Mines produced iron ore from 1882 until the 1960s. The ore that these mines produced were essential to the production of iron at the Sloss Furnaces, making them an important element in the formation of adjacent Birmingham and Bessemer as cities.An accident in January 1895 killed two people.Red Mountain Park is an urban park that runs 4.5 miles (7.2 km) from east to west along the mountain. Red Mountain Park now owns the Sloss No. 2 mine site. Park officials plan to open a portion, but not all, of the area that the mines operated on to the public. Although the entrances have for the most part been sealed, The Tenn Coal and Iron mines 10, 11, 13 and 14, located in Red Mountain Park, are planned for development into interactive visitor sites. In addition, walking trails on the former mining sites have been developed, as well as the preservation of a mine worker's cemetery and many historic mining structures.

Midfield is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States, located two miles south of the Birmingham suburb of Fairfield. It incorporated in 1953. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 5,211.

The Bessemer Hall of History is a museum located in, and devoted to the history of, the city of Bessemer, Alabama. The museum is housed in the former Alabama Great Southern Railroad (later Southern Railway) depot in downtown Bessemer. The depot, built by the AGS in 1916, served passengers until the Amtrak era began in the early 1970s. The building sat unused for several years, but was reopened by the city of Bessemer in 1985, and officially rededicated during the city's centennial observance in 1987. The museum houses a wide array of artifacts from the city's history as a mining, steelmaking, and industrial center. The building also houses artifacts relating to the brief imprisonment of Martin Luther King Jr. in the city. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 as Southern Railway Terminal Station.

The Downtown Bessemer Historic District, in Bessemer, Alabama, is a historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The listing included 70 contributing buildings on 26 acres (11 ha).The district is roughly bounded by 21st St., N., Carolina Ave., 19th St., N., 5th Ave., N. and the former Southern railroad tracks. Besides the 70 contributing buildings, it also included 71 non-contributing buildings and six non-contributing sites.Some of the sites are: the former Southern Railway Terminal Station (1916), 1905 Alabama Avenue, which was already separately listed on the National Register. Later became the "Bessemer Hall of History", a museum. It is a Prairie Style-influenced brick railroad passenger station. Bessemer City Hall (1938–41), 1800 Third Avenue., a three-story buff brick building built in a modified Art Deco style, as a Works Progress Administration project. It has a square corner clock tower with the old City Hall's 1890 clock. It includes the City Auditorium. Jefferson County Courthouse (1919), 1801 Third Avenue, a three-story buff brick building with "the enframed block design popular in the early decades of the 20th century, especially for government buildings". Its "end bays project slightly with recessed panels and inset Ionic columns; five bays in central section between that are defined by slightly projecting piers." The Bright Star is a restaurant in Bessemer, Alabama. It was named an America's Classic by the James Beard Foundation in 2010. In 2023 it was named the Best Local Restaurant in Alabama by Southern Living. It is the oldest restaurant in Alabama.

Western Hills Mall is a shopping mall located in Fairfield, Alabama, United States, a suburb of Birmingham. The mall opened in 1969 as the second in Birmingham, under the development of Aronov Realty. Loveman's of Alabama, which became Pizitz in 1980, was one of its original anchor stores. Pizitz later became McRae's, then Parisian. JCPenney was the other major store, with Yeilding's and F.W. Woolworth Company as the other major tenants. The Yeilding's space was later occupied by Goody's Family Clothing. In 2006, Western Hills Mall underwent a major transformation. The JCPenney location was demolished, with the mall building being truncated at the former Penney entrance. A new Walmart Supercenter was built on the site of the former JCPenney. Parisian also closed in the late 2000s and a Burlington Coat Factory took its place.In January 2016, Walmart Supercenter closed its doors. In February 2017, Burlington Coat Factory also went out of business from the mall, which left the mall with no anchors.On February 16, 2018, a shootout occurred at the mall. Anthony Alberigi, the manager of the mall, was killed in the gunfire.In January 2022, the Peleg Group of Miami, Florida, bought the mall from Aronov Realty for $2.94 million. Once taking ownership, they went forward with a $4 million renovation project that included new AC, new paint, a new parking lot and fixing various roof issues.

Lawson State Community College (Lawson State, Lawson, LSCC) is a public, historically black community college with campuses in Birmingham and Bessemer, Alabama. The technical division of the college was founded as Wenonah State Technical Institute in Birmingham in 1949. Lawson State is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, and offers nearly 200 associate degree and certificate programs.LSCC's athletic teams compete in the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). They are collectively known as the Cougars.In 2014, LSCC was announced as the leader of a four-year, $10 million federally-funded transportation industry training across four states. The college was ranked No. 5 on the Washington Monthly's Best Community Colleges list in 2013. The White House recognized LSCC as a "Champion of Change" in 2011 for its efforts to educate workers for its community.

Canaan Baptist Church is a Baptist church located in Bessemer, Alabama. It is affiliated with the National Baptist Convention, USA. Built in 1961, it had a congregation active in the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Wenonah High School is a four-year public high school in Birmingham, Alabama. It is one of seven high schools in the Birmingham City School System. School colors are Old gold and white. The mascot is the Dragon. Wenonah competes in Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 5A athletics.
