McDonald Chapel is a census-designated place in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is northeast of the Birmingham suburb of Pleasant Grove. At the 2020 census, the population was 739. Large portions of this area were damaged by violent tornadoes in 1956, 1998, and 2011. The 1998 tornado was rated F5 on the Fujita scale.

At its 2010 census the population was 836, down from its peak population of 973 in 2000. Its communities were damaged by an F5 tornado on April 8, 1998. The town's name is possibly derived from the Creek word omalga meaning "all". Possibly the most notable person from Mulga is "Phyllis" a frequent caller into the Paul Finebaum radio show on ESPN. "Phyllis" was a strong supporter of Alabama Crimson Tide football and did not hesitate to let Paul and his listeners know where she stood on the topic. "Phyllis" died on May 11, 2023.

Bayview is a community in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. It is north from the Birmingham suburb of Pleasant Grove. This community is built around Bayview Lake. It voted to be annexed by its nearest town of Mulga. However, Bayview today retains its own community identity.

Westfield is an unincorporated community and former coal mining town in Jefferson County, Alabama. It was a coal mining camp for Tennessee Coal & Iron Co. that was purchased by U.S. Steel and developed as a planned steel worker community that was predominantly African American. It was home to Westfield High School. In 1969 it was described as a model of company owned community with various amenities noted.Star professional baseball player Willie Mays was born in Westfield in 1931. Lawyer and former judge U. W. Clemon grew up in Westfield.Rev. Clarence S. Reeves wrote a history of the high school. It closed with desegregation. Alumni remained active in subsequent years. In 2013 the film Westfield: Struggles to Successabout Westfield High School debuted.Early in businessman A. G. Gaston's career he worked in the mines around Westfield. After his return from military service in Europe during World War I, he "was as a labourer with the Tennessee Coal & Iron Co. in Westfield, Alabama where his interest in entrepreneurship began to surface."

Mount Ararat Baptist Church is a historic church at 1920 Slayden Avenue, Ensley in Birmingham, Alabama. It is located in the Ensley suburb, west of downtown Birmingham, and overlooks Highway 239. It was originally built in 1929 but was modified in 1950 to add a red brick veneer.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. It has also been known as Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church.It was designed by African-American architect Wallace Rayfield and is described as having "a restrained Gothic Revival design". It is a cross-gabled church originally built in 1929 but veneered in smooth varitone red brick in 1950. It has a concrete foundation and a multi-gable asphalt shingle roof.The church is significant for its association during 1956 to 1963 with the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights and with the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham.

It is owned by Cumulus Media and carries a news/talk format, simulcast with FM sister station 99.5 WZRR. The transmitter is located in Forestdale. WAPI's daytime power is 50,000 watts, non-directional, the maximum power for AM stations permitted by the Federal Communications Commission. Because AM 1070 is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A KNX Los Angeles, WAPI must reduce power at night to 5,000 watts, using a directional antenna, as a Class B station.

Fairfield High Preparatory School is a public high school located in Fairfield, Alabama, United States, a suburb of Birmingham, and serves grades 9–12. It is the only high school in the Fairfield City School System. School colors are purple, gold, maroon, and white. The athletic teams are called the Tigers. Fairfield competes in AHSAA Class 5A athletics.Fairfield High Preparatory School, historically known as Fairfield High School, was established in 1928 to serve white students living in the Fairfield area. A second high school, Fairfield Industrial High School, was established for African-American students. Fairfield High School was integrated in 1969.

The Flintridge Building (formerly the Flint Ridge Building) is a historic office building in Fairfield, Alabama, in metropolitan Birmingham. From 1951 to 1964 it served as the headquarters of the southern division of United States Steel and housed nearly 1,500 employees. In 2004 the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Sited on a ridge on E.J. Oliver Boulevard near Miles College, the building overlooks the Fairfield Works. The front facade of the building features projecting, glass-enclosed rooms resembling stadium pressboxes, which provide a view of the ironworks.
