Sunnyside Shines

Sunnyside is a neighborhood in the western portion of the New York City borough of Queens. It shares borders with Hunters Point and Long Island City to the west, Astoria to the north, Woodside to the east and Maspeth to the south. It contains the Sunnyside Gardens Historic District, one of the first planned communities in the United States.The name "Sunnyside" originates with the Bragaw family, French Huguenots who had purchased the land in 1713 and named their estate "Sunnyside Hill". Sunnyside was a rural hamlet mostly consisting of small farms and marshland. It was incorporated into Long Island City in 1870, and developed into a bedroom community after the Queensboro Bridge was completed in 1909. A large portion of the neighborhood is six-story apartment buildings constructed during the 1920s and 1930s. Sunnyside is located in Queens Community District 2 and its ZIP Codes are 11101, 11104, and 11377. It is patrolled by the New York City Police Department's 108th Precinct. Politically, Sunnyside is represented by the New York City Council's 26th District.

The Sunnyside Garden Arena was a popular boxing venue. The old red brick arena, at the southwest corner of 45th Street and Queens Boulevard, in Sunnyside, Queens, New York City, seated about 2,500. It consisted of two parallel gables perpendicular to the street fronted by a lower, flat-roofed entry. Across the entry was a large neon sign and below that, just above the main entrance, was a large clock.

L/CPL Thomas P. Noonan Jr. Playground is a 1.05-acre (0.42 ha) playground in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Queens, New York City. Operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks), it occupies the block bounded by 42nd and 43rd Streets and Greenpoint and 47th Avenues. The playground opened in 1937 as Thomson Hill Park and was renamed in 1996 for Thomas P. Noonan Jr. (1943–1969), a United States Marine raised in nearby Woodside who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Vietnam War. The site has been used for recreation since the New Deal era, and its rainbow spray shower has given it the local nickname "Rainbow Park". Its facilities include separate play areas for younger and older children, the spray shower, basketball and handball courts, public restrooms, and a dog run. The playground was rebuilt in a roughly $2 million reconstruction completed in 2015, which added an inscribed granite base to its flagpole honoring Noonan and a plaque naming four other Sunnyside residents killed in Vietnam. A $2.5 million dog run opened in 2024. It has also served as a venue for community and cultural events.

The 40th Street–Lowery Street station (announced as simply 40th Street station on trains) is a local station on the IRT Flushing Line of the New York City Subway. It is served by the 7 local train at all times.

The Sunnyside Arch is an illuminated steel arch spanning 46th Street just south of Queens Boulevard in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Queens, New York City. Erected in 1983 to help revitalize the 46th Street commercial corridor, the roughly two-story structure carries the neighborhood's name in lights and is one of Sunnyside's best-known landmarks. Built by a local civic group that later disbanded, the arch fell into disrepair within a few years of its construction. Publicly funded repairs secured over the following decades returned it to use, including a $500,000 refurbishment completed in 2009 and a conversion to programmable LED lighting in 2018, though the new lights failed within months. It has been described as a symbol of Sunnyside and a "gateway to Queens".

Celtic Park was an athletic facility in Sunnyside, Queens, New York City, that operated from 1898 to 1930 as the home grounds of the Irish American Athletic Club (IAAC). Its members, drawn largely from Irish-American immigrants, won 26 gold, 22 silver, and 8 bronze medals for the United States at the Summer Olympics between 1900 and 1924, and Celtic Park hosted Amateur Athletic Union championships, including the 1912 All-Around championship, won by Jim Thorpe. A 1922 Volstead Act enforcement raid at a labor-union picnic on the grounds wounded four people by gunfire and contributed to the club's postwar decline. After a brief late-1920s use as a greyhound-racing track, the field was sold in 1930 to the City and Suburban Homes Company and developed as the Celtic Park Apartments, a 756-unit garden-apartment complex bounded by 42nd to 44th Streets between 48th and 50th Avenues that straddles present-day Sunnyside and Woodside. The first apartment building, completed in 1931–32, was designed by Ernest Flagg; the five subsequent buildings, completed between 1933 and 1938, were designed by Springsteen & Goldhammer. The complex was converted to cooperative ownership in May 1986. In 2012 the New York City Council co-named 43rd Street between 48th and 50th Avenues, which bisects the apartment complex, "Winged Fist Way" to commemorate the IAAC and its athletic facility.

Torsney Playground, also known as the Torsney/Lou Lodati Playground, is a public playground in Sunnyside, Queens. It covers about 2 acres (0.81 ha) on the north side of Skillman Avenue between 41st and 43rd Streets, near the Sunnyside Yard. The playground is operated by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks). The playground's children's play area is separately named the Lou Lodati Playground. The city acquired the site in 1951 and named the playground in 1952 for George F. Torsney (1896–1942), a Marine veteran and Queens member of the New York State Assembly who had campaigned for more parks in Sunnyside. In 1999 the play area was additionally dedicated to Lou Lodati (1908–1996), a Sunnyside businessman and civic organizer known locally as the "Mayor of Sunnyside". The playground was rebuilt in 1985 and again in the 21st century, and a dog run developed with a local dog owners' group opened in 2013.

The Mimar Sinan Mosque, also known as the Turkish Islamic Cultural Center, is a mosque in Sunnyside, Queens, New York City, United States. It is located at 45-06 Skillman Avenue. The Mimar Sinan Mosque in Sunnyside serves as a prayer space, weekend school for children, and primary site for community gatherings. The mosque holds religious services such as marriages, funerals, and holiday programs, drawing large crowds during Ramadan, Eid-al-Fitr, and Eid-al-Adha. It is a well-recognized institution that provides consistent service to thousands of people every month.

Joe Sabba Park is a 0.47-acre (1902 m2) New York City Public Park maintained and run by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Queens, New York at the intersection of Roosevelt Ave and Queens Boulevard, between 48th and 49th Streets. The park is named after Joe Sabba, a World War Two veteran and local activist from Sunnyside.

Sunnyside Gardens is a community within Sunnyside, a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. The area was the first development in the United States patterned after the ideas of the garden city movement initiated in England in the first decades of the twentieth century by Ebenezer Howard and Raymond Unwin, specifically Hampstead Garden Suburb and Letchworth Garden City. Covering 77 acres (31 ha) between Queens Boulevard and Sunnyside Yard, Sunnyside Gardens was constructed between 1924 to 1928 by the City Housing Corporation, founded by developer Alexander Bing, and architects Clarence Stein and Henry Wright. The project grew out of discussions in the early 1920s about housing and planning; Lewis Mumford was a leading participant. It is among the first planned communities in the U.S. Sunnyside Gardens is listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission has also designated it as an official city landmark district.

Queens Technical High School is a public career and technical education secondary school located in Long Island City, NY. The school has an enrollment of 1,513 students and serves grades 9-12. A new wing, completed in 2005, added a cafeteria, library, gymnasium, and additional classrooms. The following career and technical programs are available to students: Careers in Business, Electrical Design and Installation, Plumbing Design and Technology, Pre-Engineering Electronic Technology, Computer Technology and Information Systems, Cisco networking, Cosmetology Careers/Salon Management, Barbering, and Graphic Design. The school is operated by the New York City Department of Education.
