North Yorkshire (district)

North Yorkshire is a ceremonial county in the Yorkshire and the Humber and North East regions of England. It borders County Durham to the north, the North Sea to the east, the East Riding of Yorkshire to the south-east, South Yorkshire to the south, West Yorkshire to the south-west, and Cumbria and Lancashire to the west. Northallerton is the county town. The county is the largest in England by land area, at 9,020 km2 (3,480 sq mi), and has a population of 1,158,816. The largest settlements are Middlesbrough (174,700) in the north-east and the city of York (152,841) in the south. Middlesbrough is part of the Teesside built-up area, which extends into County Durham and has a total population of 376,663. The remainder of the county is rural, and the largest towns are Harrogate (73,576) and Scarborough (61,749). For local government purposes the county comprises four unitary authority areas — York, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, and North Yorkshire — and part of a fifth, Stockton-on-Tees. The centre of the county contains a wide plain, called the Vale of Mowbray in the north and Vale of York in the south. The North York Moors lie to the east, and south of them the Vale of Pickering is separated from the main plain by the Howardian Hills. The west of the county contains the Yorkshire Dales, an extensive upland area which contains the source of the River Ouse/Ure and many of its tributaries, which together drain most of the county. The Dales also contain the county's highest point, Whernside, at 2,415 feet (736 m).

St John's Church is an Anglican church in Dalton, near Thirsk in North Yorkshire, in England. The church was constructed on the initiative of Mary Isabel Dawnay, to a design by William Butterfield, and was completed in 1868. It was originally a chapel of ease to St Columba's Church, Topcliffe. It was grade II* listed in 1988. The church is built of stone with a Welsh slate roof, and it consists of a nave with a south porch, a chancel with a south transept and a north vestry, and a slim west bellcote tower. The tower contains a lancet window with a hood mould, and a sill band. The upper stage, which is corbelled inwards, has a clock face, and it rises to become octagonal with four lancet bell openings. Above this is an eaves band and a spirelet. The windows in the body of the church are cusped lancets. Inside the church, there is red brick, with bands of stone and blue brick. There is much polychromatic decoration, particularly in the chancel. There is a timber rood screen, and a reredos of marble and coloured stone. There is a brass chandelier in the chancel, and a stone font in the nave, both designed by Butterfield. The stained glass is by Morris & Co., with Saint John the Evangelist in the west window, Christ and angels in the east window, and the Annunication in the north window of the chancel.

Dalton is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Thirsk and near the A168 road. It mainly consists of farmland as well as an industrial estate. It has a population of 518.

Eldmire with Crakehill is a civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. The population of the parish was estimated at 30 in 2013.There is no village in the parish. The parish consists of a number of scattered houses and farms, including the hamlets of Eldmire and Crakehill on the east bank of the River Swale. Crakehill was mentioned in the Domesday Book (as Crecala). It was joined with the manor of Eldmire (also spelt Elmire) from at least the early 14th century. The two settlements formed a township in the ancient parish of Topcliffe, and became a separate civil parish in 1866.

Cod Beck is a river in North Yorkshire, England. It has a catchment area of 209 km2 (81 sq mi). The river extends for 20 miles (32 km) from above Cod Beck Reservoir at Osmotherley on the edge of the North York Moors through Thirsk and on to join the River Swale at Topcliffe.Cod Beck has a long history of flooding Thirsk and a feasibility study completed in April 2005 recommended additional flood defences and upstream storage. In 2011, a proposed flood defence scheme in Thirsk was cancelled due to the Environment Agency having its budget cut by 41%.The name Cod Beck is a derivative of Cold Beck, where beck is smaller than a river; the stream runs deep between banks, so is always fairly cool. Cod fish are not found in fresh water.

Fawdington is a hamlet and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It is on the River Swale and near the A1(M) motorway, 8 miles (13 km) south of Thirsk, and 5 miles (8 km) north-east of Boroughbridge. The population of the parish was estimated at 10 in 2015. The population remained at less than 100 at the 2011 Census. Details were included in the old civil parish of Brafferton, North Yorkshire.The name of the hamlet is generally agreed to derive from a mixture of Old English and Old Norse, with the suffix tūn meaning town. However the first part is in dispute; Ekwall states that it derives from the Old English Falding, meaning the place where animals were folded (brought into a fold), whereas the English Place-Name Society states that it is from Falda, a personal name.

Sessay railway station served the village of Sessay, North Yorkshire, England from 1841 to 1964 on the East Coast Main Line.

St Mary and All Saints' Church is the parish church of Cundall, North Yorkshire, a village in England. There was a mediaeval church in Cundall, which was described in 1823 as "mean and diminuitive", with a recently-built brick tower. The building was demolished, and a replacement was designed by Mallinson and Healey, and completed in 1852. The church was grade II listed in 1987. The church is built of limestone with a Westmorland slate roof, in the Decorated style. It consists of a three-bay nave with a south porch, a lower two-bay chancel with a north vestry, and a west tower. The tower has three stages, diagonal buttresses, a south stair tower, a west clock face, tall bell openings, and an embattled parapet. The porch is gabled and contains a pointed arch with a moulded surround. Inside the tower is an Anglo-Saxon cross shaft decorated with animals, dating from around 800. The wooden altar rail dates from 1852, while most other fixtures are early 20th century. The clock mechanism dates from 1875.

Cundall is a village in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. It is one of the Thankful Villages that suffered no fatalities during World War I.

Royal Air Force Dalton or more simply RAF Dalton is a former Royal Air Force satellite station located near to Dalton, North Yorkshire, England. The airfield was by RAF Bomber Command during the Second World War. It was a satellite of nearby RAF Topcliffe.

Sessay is a small, linear village and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 4 miles (6 km) south-east from Thirsk, and 2 miles (3 km) west from the A19 road close to the East Coast Main Line. The civil parish also includes the village of Little Sessay, where the parish church and school are located. In 2013 the population of the civil parish was estimated at 320. The 2001 UK Census recorded the population as 311 of which 266 were over sixteen years old. There were 130 dwellings of which 90 were detached.
