Christ Church, Blakenall Heath

Blakenall Heath is a suburban village in the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall in the West Midlands County, England. It straddles the border of Walsall and Bloxwich. Historically the village was a part of Staffordshire. It was originally a rural area between Walsall and Bloxwich with a small amount of private housing as recently as the beginning of the 20th century, but the face of the area changed dramatically after the end of the Great War.Farmland gave way to council housing, which surrounded the local church and a few pre-1914 buildings, and further developments took place over the next few decades. Walsall borough's first council house was completed in Blakenall Heath, on Blakenall Lane, in June 1920. Within seven years, 500 council houses had been built in the area, and by 1939 around 2,000 new council houses had been built in the Blakenall Heath, Harden, Coal Pool and Goscote areas. Several hundred more had followed by the 1970s, including three tower blocks of flats which were built in the late 1950s, as well as maisonettes in Walker Road which were built in the 1960s but quickly became unpopular with tenants as well as proving a magnet for crime, and were in demolished in 1985.The early council housing developments were divided between established neighbourhoods including Blakenall Lane and Harden Road, and new housing estates with themed street names; including the 1930s Poet's Estate at Harden (where road names included Shakespeare Crescent, Goldsmith Road and Tennyson Road) and the Green Rivers Estate at Blakenall Heath itself (where road names included Thames Road, Wye Road and Mersey Road) which was built in the 1940s and 1950s.Blakenall Heath is the centre of the Blakenall ward of Walsall, which has traditionally had some of the highest poverty and crime rates in the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall. Blakenall also includes neighbouring Harden, Goscote and Coal Pool.Between 2001 and 2006, some of the council housing around Blakenall Heath was demolished, including the whole of Taylor Avenue, the three late 1950s tower blocks, and large sections of Walker Road and Barracks Lane. Demolition has also taken place in neighbouring Harden and Goscote. New housing for the public and private sector has since been built in the place of the demolished council houses and flats.The parish church for Blakenall Heath is Christ Church, which is constructed from limestone and opened in 1872.

Leamore is a suburb of Walsall in the extreme north of the town on the border with Bloxwich. It is a mix of private and council housing built since the late 19th century. The most significant homes in the area are several multi-storey blocks of council flats, which were built in the 1960s. A council housing development took place around the centre of Leamore in the 1920s, and also included the opening of Somerfield Road, which gave Green Lane a direct link to Bloxwich town centre, and now forms part of the A34. A 280-flat multi-storey estate was developed in the early 1960s to replace an area previously occupied by slums; it was completed in 1964.The largest single housing development in Leamore is the Beechdale housing estate which was built by Walsall Council in the 1950s to rehouse people from the town centre slum clearances. Noddy Holder, the lead singer of Slade, grew up in Beechdale. Ball House and Leadbetter House tower blocks, situated in the north of Leamore and built during the 1960s, were demolished in late 2007 after some 40 years of dominating the local skyline. Bloxwich Road is one of two routes running parallel through Leamore between Walsall and Bloxwich, with the other being Green Lane.

Goscote is a residential area of Walsall in the West Midlands of England. The Goscote name dates back several centuries and as recently as the 1920s it was a largely rural area that had survived the recent Industrial Revolution which dramatically altered the face of the region.

Walsall Academy is a secondary school based in Bloxwich, West Midlands, England. It opened in September 2003 with 470 students on the roll, and after four years that figure had increased to 1,150 – making it one of the most populated secondary schools in the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall. The school was one of the first City Academies in Britain. Sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Mercers and Thomas Telford School, it provides free education for all students. Built on the site of the former T. P. Riley Comprehensive School, it cost £23 million. A number of the teachers were carried over from T.P Riley School, while others were new recruits and a few were transferred from Thomas Telford School. The current Head Teacher is Simon Rogers, who replaced Vivienne Evans. Evans replaced the first Head Teacher, Jean Hickman in September 2009. Rogers joined the school as Deputy Head before becoming the Head Teacher in April 2015. As with Thomas Telford, demand for places is high. In its first year of opening, there were 421 applicants for the 168 (raised to 192 due to demand) places on offer for Year 7 students. The number was subsequently reduced back to 168. In 2009, it was the fifth-highest-ranking secondary school overall (and the second-highest-ranking state comprehensive) in the borough with 61% of GCSE students gaining 5 A*-C grades.

Bloxwich is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall, West Midlands, England, situated in the north of the borough and forming part of the Staffordshire/West Midlands border.

St Peter's Roman Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic church in the town of Bloxwich, West Midlands, England. It is an active catholic church in the centre of the town and is notable for its two twin towers. The church plays an active role in both the Roman Catholic community and wider community as a hub for worship, events and other functions.

Little Bloxwich is a residential area of Bloxwich, West Midlands, England. It is situated in the extreme north of the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall on the border with South Staffordshire, and is one of the more rural parts of the borough. The area consists predominantly of private housing, mostly built after the Second World War. The Lower Farm council estate was built at Little Bloxwich in the 1960s on the site of a farm called Lower Farm.

Harden is an area to the north of Walsall and borders with Bloxwich, Blakenall Heath, Coalpool, Goscote and Rushall. The whole area was part of the industrial revolution, with mining and metal processing being the main industries. Although close to the A34 main road from the Stoke (potteries) to Birmingham, it is still served by canals. The area mostly developed with council housing from the 1930s, though some of the older properties have been gradually demolished since the early 1990s. A large area has been left as park land for community use.

Lower Farm Estate is a residential area of Bloxwich, a town in the West Midlands of England. It was mostly developed by the local council during the 1950s, and stands in the north side of the town which borders rural land in the direction of Cannock. There are two multi-storey blocks of council flats on Lower Farm, Smith House and Thomas House on Stoney Lane, both of which were built during the 1960s.The estate is served by the National Express West Midlands and Diamond Bus 32 bus route.

North Walsall railway station was a station built by the Wolverhampton and Walsall Railway in 1872, and was operated by the Midland Railway from 1876 onwards. It served the north Walsall areas of Birchills and Leamore. It was located west of Bloxwich Road in a cutting.The station closed in 1925, although the railway serving it remained open for a further 57 years, serving Birchills Power Station until its closure in October 1982, when the line closed.
