Douglas Lake is an inland lake located in Cheboygan County on the northern tip of Michigan's lower peninsula. It is the 28th largest lake in Michigan with an areal coverage of 3,395 acres (1,374 hectares) and a maximum depth of 79 feet (24 meters). The Lake has two tributaries, Bessey Creek and Beavertail Creek and one outlet, the East Branch Maple River. Douglas Lake is part of the headwaters for the Maple River, a Blue Ribbon trout stream.Much of the southern shoreline of Douglas Lake is undeveloped as it is owned by the University of Michigan Biological Station and is used for research and educational purposes. The University of Michigan Biological Station and the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council both maintain extensive records describing the biotic and abiotic features of Douglas Lake.

Munro Township is a civil township of Cheboygan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 571 as of the 2010 census.

Burt Township is a civil township of Cheboygan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the township population was 680.

Munro Lake is an inland lake located in Cheboygan County on the northern tip of Michigan's lower peninsula. The lake discharges into Douglas Lake and, ultimately, into the East Branch Maple River. Much of the lakeshore is publicly owned, being part of the Mackinaw State Forest.The Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council characterizes Munro Lake as a groundwater-fed, relatively shallow lake. Carved by glaciers, it now provides a home for northern pike, bass, and panfish. It has a surface area of 515 acres (208 ha), a shoreline of 5.4 miles (8.7 km), and a maximum depth of 15 feet (4.6 m).

The Maple River, which flows into Burt Lake, is a major river in the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula of the U.S. state of Michigan. The river drains sections of Cheboygan County and Emmet County, and provides an outflow for the 3,395-acre (1,374 ha) Douglas Lake.

Burt Lake is a 17,120 acres (69.3 km2) lake in Cheboygan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The western shore of the lake is on the boundary with Emmet County. The lake is named after William Austin Burt, who, together with John Mullett, made a federal survey of the area from 1840 to 1843. The lake is approximately 10 miles (16 km) long from north to south, about 5 miles (8.0 km) at its widest, and 73 feet (22 m) at its deepest. Major inflows to the lake are the Maple River, which connects with nearby Douglas Lake, the Crooked River, which connects with nearby Crooked Lake, the Sturgeon River which enters the lake near the point where the Indian River flows out of the lake into nearby Mullett Lake and the Little Carp River which enters on the northern end of the lake. The lake is part of the Inland Waterway, by which one can boat from Crooked Lake several miles (km) east of Petoskey on the Little Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan across the northern tip of the lower peninsula's so-called mitten to Cheboygan on Lake Huron. Along with nearby Mullett Lake and Black Lake, it is noted for its population of Lake Sturgeon, which briefly held the record of largest sturgeon caught in the USA. YMCA Camp Al-Gon-Quian and Burt Lake State Park are both located on the southern shore of the lake. The unincorporated community of Burt Lake is on the southwest shore on M-68. Interstate 75 passes to the east of the lake, with two interchanges near the south end of the lake at the unincorporated community of Indian River.

The Inland Waterway or Inland Water Route is a 38-mile-long (61 km) series of rivers and lakes in the U.S. state of Michigan. With only a short portage, it forms a navigable route for small craft connecting Lake Huron and Crooked Lake, across the Northern Michigan region. Despite Little Traverse Bay being only 2 miles west of Crooked Lake, the waterway does not connect to it, making Lake Michigan inaccessible through this route. The route is in Emmet and Cheboygan counties and consists of Crooked Lake, Crooked River, Burt Lake, Indian River, Mullett Lake, and the Cheboygan River. The route passes through or near the communities of Conway, Oden, Ponshewaing, Alanson, Indian River, Topinabee, and Cheboygan.

Pellston Public Schools is a school district located in Pellston, Michigan. It consists of Pellston Elementary School and Pellston Middle/High School. The district mascot is the hornet. Most of the district is in Emmet County. There it includes Pellston, Carp Lake, Levering, and portions of Brutus. Townships included are all of Bliss, Center, and McKinley, and sections of Carp Lake, Maple River, Pleasantview, Readmond, and Wawatam. Portions of the district are in Cheboygan County. There it includes Burt Township and portions of Hebron Township and Munro Township.

Pellston Middle/High School is a combined middle and high school in Pellston, Michigan, with a shared principal overseeing grades 6–12 in the Pellston Public Schools district. The school serves the Northwest Michigan area, including the townships of Bliss, Burt Lake, Carp Lake, Center, Hebron, Maple River, McKinley, Munro, Pleasantview, Readmond, and Wawatam. The school received a composite grade of B from the Michigan Department of Education, based on several measures of the school's performance for the 2009–2010 school year.

Topinabee ( top-EN-uh-bee) is an unincorporated community in Cheboygan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The community is located within Mullet Township along the southwestern shores of Mullett Lake. As an unincorporated community, Topinabee has no legally defined boundaries or population statistics of its own but does have its own post office with the 49791 ZIP Code.

Pellston is a village in Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 822 at the 2010 census. The village is the home of Pellston Regional Airport. The village lies on the boundary between Maple River and McKinley townships on US Highway 31. Interstate 75 is about 10 miles (16 km) east of Pellston. Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge are approximately 18 miles (29 km) north and Petoskey is about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of the village. The University of Michigan Biological Station is on nearby Douglas Lake.
