The Freeman Field mutiny was a series of incidents at Freeman Army Airfield, a United States Army Air Forces base near Seymour, Indiana, in 1945 in which African American members of the 477th Bombardment Group attempted to integrate an all-white officers' club. The mutiny resulted in 162 separate arrests of black officers, some of them twice. Three were court-martialed on relatively minor charges. One was convicted. In 1995, the Air Force officially vindicated the actions of the African-American officers, set aside the single court-martial conviction and removed letters of reprimand from the permanent files of 15 of the officers. The mutiny is generally regarded by historians of the Civil Rights Movement as an important step toward full integration of the armed forces and as a model for later efforts to integrate public facilities through civil disobedience.

The district encompasses 322 contributing buildings, 2 contributing sites, and 2 contributing objects in Rising Sun. It developed between about 1810 and 1955, and includes notable examples of Federal, Italianate, and Classical Revival style architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed Clore Plow Works-J.W. Whitlock and Company buildings. Other notable contributing resources include the First Presbyterian Church (1843), Ohio County Courthouse (1845), Alexander C. Downey House (c. 1850), Rising Sun Cemetery (aka Union and Soldier's Cemeteries; c. 1810), and Robert E. Covington House (c. 1885).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

The Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge located 3 miles (5 kilometers) east of Seymour, Indiana, on U.S. Route 50. Established in 1966, it comprises 7,802 acres (3,157 hectares) in its main area of eastern Jackson and western Jennings counties, and an additional 78 acres (32 ha) in northwestern Monroe County, near Bloomington, Indiana, known as the "Restle Unit". It was established thanks to the selling of Federal Migratory Waterfowl Stamps, commonly known as Duck Stamps, by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. It was Indiana's first National Wildlife Refuge. The name comes from the Muscatatuck River, which means "land of winding waters". Converted farm lands comprise 60% of the total land area of the refuge. Several archaeological sites in the refuge are on the National Register of Historic Places. Much of the tree cover is deciduous forest.A visitor center, eight hiking trails (ranging from 1⁄5 to 4 miles or 0.3 to 6 kilometers of easy to moderate hiking), a 4-mile (6-kilometer) driving tour, two pioneer cemeteries, and a log cabin of historical significance are available for the 125,000 annual visitors to the refuge to enjoy. The refuge is open for visitation from 1 hour before sunrise to 1 hour after sunset.The refuge should not be confused with the former Muscatatuck State Park of Indiana, which became Muscatatuck County Park when control of the land was given back to Jennings County, Indiana.

Seymour is a city in Jackson County, Indiana, United States. Its population was 21,569 at the 2020 census. The city is noted for its location at the intersection of two major north–south and east–west railroads, which cross each other in the downtown area. The north–south line (the Jeffersonville, Madison and Indianapolis Railroad) was built in the 1840s and connected Indianapolis to the Ohio River at Jeffersonville. In 1852, Captain Meedy Shields persuaded Hezekiah Cook Seymour into building the eastwest railroad (the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad) through his land, and in return named the city in Seymour's honor. The firsts settlers arrived in the spring of 1853. The companies Aisin USA and Rose Acre Farms are headquartered in Seymour, and Cummins operates a plant in the area. The city is also home to the 2nd largest high school gymnasium in the United States by seating capacity.

Other notable buildings include the Masonic Temple (1901), Richart Block (1900), Steinker Meat Market (c. 1885), Seymour National Bank (c. 1920), Southern Indiana Telephone and Telegraph Building (1929), Jonas Hotel (c 1876), and Kidd Saloon (1887).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
