John Downing Jr. House

The Middleport Public Library is a historic Carnegie library in the Ohio River village of Middleport, Ohio, United States. Built in the early twentieth century, it has been named a historic site. Middleport was founded as "Sheffield" during the 1820s, a time of great prosperity and rapidly increasing commerce in Meigs County. Among its earliest industries was a cotton mill, built despite the lack of cotton production in the vicinity. Local residents formed the village's first public library in 1908, but its initial location on the second floor of a commercial building soon proved unsatisfactory. One year later, the library's board contacted Andrew Carnegie's Carnegie Corporation in order to begin participating in its library construction program. Negotiations ultimately resulted in the foundation agreeing to provide the village with construction money, and the building was completed in 1912 under the direction of Athens contractor Charles Kirchner.The Middleport library is a brick building with a tiled roof and a brick foundation. Its architecture is generally simple, although some details of the facade display a Georgian Revival architectural flavor; some of the more ornate examples are the pediment above the portico, the quoins, and the dentils underneath the pediment and the cornice. In January 1986, the library was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It qualified for inclusion under two different criteria: its architecture, which makes the library Middleport's most distinctive public building, and for its place in local history — besides its status as an example of small-town Carnegie libraries, it remained an icon of Middleport's early twentieth-century community activities. The library is one of three Middleport locations on the National Register, along with the John Downing Jr. House and the William H. Grant House.The Middleport library currently is operated as a branch of Meigs County District Public Library system.

Clifton is an unincorporated community in Mason County, West Virginia, United States. Clifton is located on the east bank of the Ohio River along West Virginia Route 62, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south of Mason; Middleport, Ohio lies across the river. Clifton had a post office, which closed on May 24, 1997.The community was named for the cliffs near the original town site.

Powell-Redmond House is a historic home located at Clifton, Mason County, West Virginia. It was built in 1866, and is a 2+1⁄2-story red brick residence in the Italianate-style. It has a rear ell and features floor-length, doublehung, first story windows with heavy segmental stone lintels. The interior has a ballroom with a variety of intact ornamental plasterwork. It was built by William Henry Powell (1825–1904), who had established the Clifton Iron & Nail Company in 1866. Powell was a general in the American Civil War who fought mostly in West Virginia and Virginia.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The William H. Grant House is a historic house in Middleport, Ohio, United States. One of the area's earliest concrete houses, it has been designated a historic site. Built in 1852, the house is constructed of concrete on a foundation of sandstone. Two stories tall, the house is rectangular with a small frame addition to the rear, which was built about ten years after the original part of the house. Born in 1820, William H. Grant pioneered concrete architecture in Meigs County: a small experimental house (no longer in existence) was the first concrete building in the county, and the present house, near the experimental building, was the second.Besides serving as a residence, the house is a local religious landmark. Before dying in 1845, Johnny Appleseed visited Middleport and converted the Grants to Swedenborgianism. Several other Middleport residents also joined the new religion, and after building the present house, the Grants used it as a meeting place for their coreligionists. In recognition of its place in local history and its distinctive method of construction, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It is one of three places in Middleport on the National Register, along with the John Downing Jr. House and the Middleport Public Library.

The Bridge of Honor, commonly known as the Pomeroy–Mason Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River between the American cities of Pomeroy, Ohio and Mason, West Virginia. With construction being carried out by the C.J. Mahan Construction Company and overseen by the Ohio Department of Transportation, it was completed on December 30, 2008. Ownership of the bridge was transferred to the West Virginia Division of Highways upon completion. The crossing carries Ohio State Route 833 and West Virginia Route Spur 62.

Wahama Junior/Senior High School is located in Mason, West Virginia, United States. It is the second-largest high school in the county. It is a part of Mason County Schools. The school was established in 1925, and its unusual name was derived from the first two letters of each of the three area districts: Waggener, Hartford, and Mason. Classes were held in the International Order of Odd Fellows building in Mason, as well as a building on the lot of the old Mason Grade School until 1931, when a new building opened on the land where the school now sits. Originally, the school housed only grades 9 through 12. Students from the Graham and New Haven districts in the county also began attending the high school. The school's stadium was built in 1948 and named Bachtel Stadium. In 1962, the school's enrollment had increased and it was necessary to add a brand new junior high building. By the 1971-1972 school year, it was decided that the newer junior high building would become the new high school and vice versa. The old high school building served as the junior high until 1989. The cafeteria was still connected to the building until 1996 when a new one was built. The junior high building was demolished in 1999.

Shumaker-Lewis House, also known as Virgil A. Lewis House, was a historic home located in Mason, West Virginia. It was built about 1885, and was a two-story Victorian-era frame cottage. It featured a two tier Eastlake movement style porch. It was the home of Virgil A. Lewis (1848-1912), the first State Historian and Archivist of West Virginia, 1905–1912. It was the headquarters of the Mason City Historical Society. It was demolished in 2014 and the Virgil A. Lewis Park now occupies the site.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

It is part of the Point Pleasant, WV–OH Micropolitan Statistical Area. Mason was initially known as Waggener's Bottom. It was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly in 1856, and named for Mason County, which was named for George Mason, a delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention.

Waggener Magisterial District is one of ten magisterial districts in Mason County, West Virginia, United States. The district was originally established as a civil township in 1863, and converted into a magisterial district in 1872. In 2020, Waggener District was home to 2,483 people.
