Helsby hill fort

Helsby War Memorial was built to commemorate the servicemen of Helsby lost in active service in the First World War. It was unveiled in 1920, and the names of those lost in the Second World War were added later. The memorial stands in the churchyard of St Paul's Church in Helsby, Cheshire, England, and consists of a Celtic cross in sandstone on a pedestal and steps. On the shaft of the cross is an inscription and on the pedestal are the names of those lost in the conflicts. The war memorial is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.

Harmers Wood is a small woodland with sandstone quarries in Helsby village in the north of Cheshire, England. It is a nine-acre woodland containing mainly silver birch trees with some oak and a smattering of holly trees, rowan, hawthorn and gorse. The wood is owned by the Friends of Harmers Wood Trust as a not-for-profit business managed on behalf of the local community.

Helsby is a village, civil parish and electoral ward in the unitary authority of Cheshire West and Chester and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. Overlooking the Mersey estuary, it is approximately 9 miles (14 km) north east of Chester and 2.5 miles (4 km) south west of Frodsham. In the 2001 census the civil parish of Helsby had a population of 4,701. By the 2011 census this had risen to 4,972.

Helsby and Alvanley railway station was one of two railway stations serving the village of Helsby in Cheshire. The station was the terminus of the Helsby branch operated by the Cheshire Lines Committee and later British Railways. It has since been closed. The other station, Helsby railway station, remains open.

Alvanley is a small rural village and civil parish near Helsby, in the unitary authority of Cheshire West and Chester and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. The village is on the B5393 road and near junction 14 of the M56 motorway. According to the 2011 census the civil parish had a population of 472.

St John the Evangelist's Church is in the village of Alvanley, Cheshire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Frodsham. Its benefice is united with that of St John the Evangelist, Manley. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. It is described by the authors of the Buildings of England series as "a building of some character".

Alvanley Hall is in Manley Road, 0.25 miles (0.4 km) to the southeast of the village of Alvanley, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building. It is associated with the Arden family.The hall dates from various periods, mainly the 17th century, with some parts from earlier dates, and with later additions. It is constructed in red sandstone, with later brick additions, and has a grey slate roof. It is an L-shaped building in two storeys and an attic. It contains tall mullioned windows, and internal timber-framed partitions. In the cellar are two large medieval piers standing on polygonal concave-sided bases.Some 180 metres (590 ft) to the southeast of the hall is a tithe barn dating from the late 17th century constructed in brick with a slate roof, and standing on a sandstone plinth. It is listed at Grade II.

Woodhouse hill fort is an Iron Age hillfort between Frodsham and Helsby in Cheshire, England. It lies at the northern end of the Mid Cheshire Ridge. Woodhouse Hill has steep cliffs on the western sides, providing a natural defence. It is defended by a rampart to the north and east where the ground slopes more gently. Excavations in 1951 showed that the rampart was originally 4m high and revetted with stone on both sides. A number of small rounded stones, believed to be slingstones, have been found on the site. The hill fort is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.The hill has a summit of 137m AOD. The fort site and the surrounding areas form a part of within Snidley Moor Wood much of which is owned and managed by the Woodland Trust.

Hapsford Hall is a country house about 1 mile (1.6 km) south-west of Helsby, Cheshire, England. It was built in the late 18th or early 19th century and incorporates a former farmhouse; additions and alterations have been made since it was built. It is constructed in brick and stone, stands on a stone plinth, and has stone quoins and a hipped slate roof. The house is in three storeys, with cellars and an attic, and has a symmetrical front of three bays. Most of the windows on the front are sashes; elsewhere are casement windows. An embattled stone porch projects from the centre. The house is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.Also listed at Grade II is a barn to the south of the house. This was built at about the same date as the house. It is also constructed in brick, stands on a stone plinth and has a slate roof. The barn has a five-bay north front. The second and fourth bays contain recessed arches and air-vents; the other bays have arched openings, one of which is blocked, above which are pitch holes. The south front is similar, but has square windows in the ground floor of the lateral bays, and its pitch holes are blocked.
