Block Island Historical Society

The U.S. Weather Bureau Station is an historic former weather station on Beach Avenue on Block Island, Rhode Island. It is a two-story wood-frame structure, three bays wide, with a flat roof surrounded by a low balustrade. There is a full-width porch across the front, supported by grouped columns. The Classical Revival building was designed by Harding & Upman, and constructed in 1903, replacing a station destroyed by fire the previous year. It originally had meteorological instruments mounted on the roof and the grounds, and was used as a weather station until 1950. It was then converted for use as a summer tourist residence.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Hygeia House is a historic vacation home on Beach Avenue on Block Island (New Shoreham, Rhode Island). It is a 2-3 story wood-frame structure, four bays wide, with a mansard roof. The building presents 2+1⁄2 stories to the front, with a row of four dormers in the roof, and a porch extending the full width of the front, and wrapping around to the right to join a projecting section of the main block. The hotel was built in 1885, and operated as the Seaside House at a location about 150 yards (140 m) south of its present location. It was moved here in 1907, to what were then the grounds of the Hygeia Hotel, a much larger hotel which burned down in 1916. The Hygeia's previous owner, Dr. John Champlin, had his medical office in this building, and continued to rent rooms to summer visitors. It was used as employee housing for other tourist facilities for many years.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

WCRI-FM (95.9 MHz; "Classical 95.9") is an FM radio station on Block Island, Rhode Island, and serving the Newport area. It is a rare classical music station supported by commercial advertising and not operated as a public radio station. It is affiliated with the World Classical Network (WCN). The station is owned by Judson Group, Inc., a company that includes the son and grandsons of broadcasting pioneer Ted Jones, founder of Charles River Broadcasting and Boston classical music station WCRB. WCRI-FM has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 6,000 watts as a Class A station. The transmitter is off Ocean Avenue at Beach Avenue in New Shoreham. The studios are on South County Trail in Exeter.

The Old Harbor Historic District is an historic district in the resort community of New Shoreham on Block Island off the southern coast of Rhode Island. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Main Street, it includes Spring, High, and Water streets as well. There are 42 buildings listed in the district, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

WMNP (99.3 FM, "Mixx 99.3") is an American radio station licensed to serve the community of Block Island, Rhode Island. The station is owned by 3G Broadcasting, Inc. Its studio is located in Newport, Rhode Island. WMNP broadcasts a Top 40 (CHR) music format that targets southern Rhode Island, Southeastern Connecticut and the South Coast of Massachusetts.

Block Island School is a K-12 school in Block Island, Rhode Island. It was built in 1933, replacing five one roomed schools. Today, the Block Island School educates about 160 students, kindergarten through senior year. A regular school day, Monday through Thursday, runs from 7:50 am – 2:50 pm. Every Friday, school dismisses at 12:22 pm to allow for student-athletes to travel for sporting events either on, or off the island.

Block Island State Airport (IATA: BID, ICAO: KBID, FAA LID: BID) is a public use airport located on Block Island, in Washington County, Rhode Island, United States. The airport is owned by the State of Rhode Island. It is primarily a general aviation airport, but there is also scheduled airline service to Westerly State Airport. The airport opened in 1950. As per Federal Aviation Administration records, the airport had 10,384 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2008, 8,516 enplanements in 2009, and 9,821 in 2010. It is included in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021, in which it is categorized as a non-hub primary commercial service facility.Block Island State Airport is one of six active airports operated by the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, the other five being T.F. Green State Airport, Newport State Airport, North Central State Airport, Quonset State Airport and Westerly State Airport.

Block Island is an island of the Outer Lands coastal archipelago, located approximately 9 miles (14 km) south of mainland Rhode Island and 14 miles (23 km) east of Long Island's Montauk Point. The island is coterminous with the town of New Shoreham, Rhode Island and is part of Washington County. The island is named after Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, and the town was named for Shoreham, Kent, in England. Block Island is a popular summer tourist destination known for its bicycling, hiking, sailing, fishing, and beaches. It is home to the historic lighthouses Block Island North Light, on the northern tip of the island, and Block Island Southeast Light, on the southeastern coast. About 40 percent of the island is set aside for conservation, and much of the northwestern tip of the island is an undeveloped natural area and resting stop for birds along the Atlantic flyway. The Nature Conservancy includes Block Island on its list of "The Last Great Places", which consists of 12 sites in the western hemisphere.Popular events include the annual Fourth of July Parade, celebration, and fireworks. The island's population can triple over the normal summer vacation crowd. As of the 2020 Census, the island's population is 1,410 living on a land area of 9.734 square miles (25.211 km2).

The Peleg Champlin House is an historic house on Rodman Pond Lane in western New Shoreham, on Block Island, in Rhode Island. It is a 1+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure, five bays wide, with a side-gable roof and a large central chimney. An ell extends from the back (north) side of the house. The Federal style wooden house was built c. 1820 by Peleg Champlin, a farmer from one of the island's older families. The house is one of the best-preserved houses of the period on the island.The residence was added to the National Historic Register in 1982, after a campaign led by Ronald Reagan.

Block Island Southeast Light is a lighthouse located on Mohegan Bluffs at the southeastern corner of Block Island, Rhode Island. It was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1997 as one of the most architecturally sophisticated lighthouses built in the United States in the 19th century.

Located approximately 12 miles (19 km) offshore on picturesque Block Island, the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge provides crucial habitat for wildlife, and a place for people to appreciate the natural environment of the island. The refuge was established in 1973 with the transfer of 28 acres (110,000 m2) from the U.S. Coast Guard, and has grown to its current size of 127 acres (0.51 km2) today. Block Island National Wildlife Refuge is administered as part of the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which manages all five of the National Wildlife Refuges in Rhode Island, and is headquartered in Charlestown, Rhode Island. Situated along the Atlantic Flyway, Block Island is one of the most important migratory bird habitats on the east coast. Many songbirds "overfly" the mainland and stopover on Block Island before continuing their migration. Hundreds of "birders" visit the refuge each fall to watch migration. The refuge also provides habitat for the endangered American burying beetle, supporting the only population of this species known east of the Mississippi River. Piping plovers, a threatened species, occur in the refuge, as do four other state species of concern. The refuge is also home to the largest gull colony in Rhode Island.

The Mohegan Bluffs are large clay cliffs about 150 feet (46 m) high, located on the southern shore of Block Island. They got their name because the battle of the Niantic and the Mohegan took place here in the mid 16th century. The battle was over supremacy of the island, and the Mohegans were forced over the cliffs to their death by the native Niantic.These cliffs are a beautiful site, and can be observed from the top, where visitors can look out for miles on the Atlantic Ocean or visitors can climb down the steep staircase of over 100 steps and view them from the beach (also known as Corn Cove). The visiting times are from a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset. Visitors usually spend the day here tanning on the beach, swimming in the ocean, walking their dogs, or simply admiring the cliffs.Through the years, the Mohegan Bluffs have eroded about 250 feet (76 m), and because of this, the Block Island Southeast Lighthouse had to be moved back about 360 feet (110 m) to keep it from tumbling into the ocean.
