Wansbeck General Hospital is a district general hospital based in Ashington, Northumberland, England. It is managed by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Woodhorn Railway is a 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) long railway on 2 ft (610 mm) narrow-gauge track. The line runs from Woodhorn, Northumberland, England, to a restaurant in the car park of the QE2 lake.

Woodhorn, part of Museums Northumberland and formerly known as Woodhorn Colliery Museum, is located in Ashington, Northumberland, England. The museum depicts the lives of coal mine workers and features original buildings and equipment from the former colliery, including the two headframes, a winding house, other engine houses, a steam winding engine, stables, a building with ventilation equipment, a blacksmith and joiners shop, and the office. Several buildings contain original equipment and mining exhibits, while others have been converted to museum exhibit areas or wedding, conference and event facilities.In addition to exhibits about the mine and the life of a miner, the museum features a permanent collection of art created by the Ashington Group. There are also changing exhibits of history, art and science.

The Alcan Lynemouth Aluminium Smelter was an industrial facility near Ashington, Northumberland, on the coast of North East England, 0.65 mi (1.05 km) south of the village of Lynemouth. The smelter was owned by the Canadian aluminium company Alcan, which is part of Rio Tinto. The smelter was opened in 1974 at a cost, which exceeded its budgeted estimate of £54 million, of $156 million. The plant ceased production in March 2012, and demolition of the facility was completed in March 2018.

Ashington Association Football Club is a football club based in Ashington, Northumberland, England. They are currently members of the Northern Premier League Division One East and play at Woodhorn Lane. Formed in 1883, the club have played in a number of local and regional leagues, including the Northern Alliance, the East Northumberland League, the North Eastern League, the Midland League, Wearside League and the North Regional League. They were a founding member of the Football League Third Division North in 1921 and are the northernmost team to have played in the Football League. The club were later founder members of the Northern Premier League in 1968 and have been in the Northern League since 1970.

Lynemouth Colliery was a coal mine in Lynemouth, Northumberland, England. It was in operation between 1927 and 1994. According to Historic England, "it was one of Britain's largest collieries until it was closed due to an underground fire". The colliery was demolished in 2005. Its number 1 pit was the downcast, and its number 2 was the upcast.In 1960, the mine employed 1,734 people (1,390 above ground, 344 below).

The NCEA Duke's Secondary School is an 11–19 academy in Ashington, Northumberland, England. It is part of the Northumberland Church of England Trust occupying the Josephine Butler Campus of its predecessor, The Northumberland Church of England Academy, which was an all-through school spread out across six campuses in southeastern Northumberland.

Newbiggin-by-the-Sea railway station, also referred to as Newbiggin station, served the town of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland, England from 1872 to 1964 on the Blyth and Tyne Railway.

Lynemouth Power Station is a biomass power plant which provides electricity for the UK National Grid. Until March 2012, it was the main source of electricity for the nearby Alcan Lynemouth Aluminium Smelter. It is located on the coast of Northumberland, north east of the town of Ashington in north east England. The station has stood as a landmark on the Northumberland coast since it opened in 1972, and had been privately owned by aluminium company Rio Tinto Alcan throughout its operation until December 2013, when RWE npower took over. In January 2016 it was acquired by Energetický a průmyslový holding.The station is one of the most recently built coal-fired power stations in the United Kingdom, but with a generating capacity of only 420 megawatts (MW), was one of the smallest.In 2011, it was announced that the power station may be converted to burn biomass only, in a bid to avoid government legislation. In January 2016 the station was purchased by Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH). The station converted to biomass in 2018, ending its use of coal. Two separate wind farm plants currently have permission to be built near the station, one for a 13 turbine wind farm near the smelter and another three turbine wind farm to the north of the station. In 2009, Alcan announced that they hope to fit the station with carbon capture and storage technology.

Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is a seaside town and civil parish in Northumberland, England, located on the North Sea coast. The town is a fishing port and formerly a part of a trade route for shipping grain. Between 1908 and 1967 the town had a coal mine, which was converted into the Woodhorn Museum and heritage centre. It is a beach resort, and its beach contains a well-known sculpture, Couple, by Sean Henry. Between 1908 and 1967, the town operated a coal mine that later became the Woodhorn Museum and heritage centre. Newbiggin also became a popular beach resort by 1828 and remains a tourist attraction with landmarks such as the Couple sculpture by Sean Henry, and the 13th-century parish church. The town council oversees governance while the economy remains diverse with 89 active companies as of this date. Newbiggin was part of the Wansbeck local government district until 2009, and lies within the Wansbeck UK Parliamentary constituency, represented by Ian Lavery MP since 2010. The town holds an annual music festival that raises money for charity and is also home to several religious sites representing various denominations.

Northumberland College is a further education college based in Ashington, Northumberland, England. The present site opened in 1957, and became the County Technical College in 1961, transformed again in 1987, becoming the Northumberland College of Arts and Technology, and finally settled upon its current status in 1995.It has a main campus in Ashington in the south east of the County and additional centres at Kirkley Hall, Hexham and Berwick. The college offers outreach courses from a number of smaller community venues and employability courses in community venues. Northumberland College provides further education courses to school leavers and adult learners in a wide range of subjects, including Access and Education; Art, Design and Interactive Media; Business and Administration; Construction; Early Years; Engineering; Functional Skills; Foundation Learning; Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy; Health and Social Care; Hospitality and Catering; Information Technology; Land Based Industries; Renewable Energies; Sport and Leisure and Travel and Tourism. A recent development is a new course in Music Production. Higher Education courses are also available. There are Foundation Degrees in Horticulture, Agriculture, Arboriculture, Environmental Conservation, Animal Management, Equine Studies and Children's Workforce Practice as well as Higher National Diplomas in Travel and Tourism, Hospitality, Engineering, Textile Studies, Photography and IT. A wide range of apprenticeships are available in Business Administration, IT, Engineering, Construction, Horticulture, Hospitality, Health and Social Care and Early Years. Northumberland College merged with Sunderland College and Hartlepool Sixth Form in 2019 to create Education Partnership North East. Gary Potts is the current principal.

Lynemouth is a village in Northumberland, England, 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Ashington, close to the village of Ellington to the north west. It was built close to coal mines, including Lynemouth Colliery. Lynemouth and the surrounding industrial area featured in the 1985 docudrama Seacoal about the seacoalers who made a living from collecting waste coal from the beach. A series of photographs in the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award–winning book In Flagrante (1988) by Chris Killip shows the work and life of the seacoalers; more were published in 2011 in the book Seacoal.To the south of the village is the former Alcan Lynemouth Aluminium Smelter, now closed, and Lynemouth Power Station.
