Southern Lee High School

Buffalo Presbyterian Church and Cemeteries is a historic Presbyterian church and cemeteries located at 1333 Carthage Street in Sanford, Lee County, North Carolina. It was built in 1879, and is a two-story, gable-fronted, Gothic Revival style frame building. The front facade features lancet-arched double-leaf entries, lancet-arched windows, and a three-stage projecting entry tower with a flared, pyramidal roof and finial. Associated with the church is the manse built in 1926. It is a two-story, hip-roofed frame dwelling with Colonial Revival detailing. Also on the property are the original church cemetery, a cemetery for African-American congregants, the Matthews family plot, and the main cemetery. It is the oldest Presbyterian Church in Lee County, Sanford, North Carolina. This is an active congregation of the Presbyterian Church USA. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Tramway is an area of Lee County, North Carolina, United States which politically forms part of Sanford. It is located on U.S. 1/15/501, north of the road's intersection with North Carolina Highway 78. Its elevation is 499 feet or 152 meters. According to one local source, the name of the area derives from a 19th-century tramway used to transport timber to a sawmill inaccessible by wagons, and, presumably, the lumber returned.

Lee Avenue Historic District is a national historic district located at Sanford, Lee County, North Carolina. It encompasses 70 contributing buildings in the historic village of Jonesboro, now part of Sanford. The district includes notable examples of Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture, with buildings largely dated between about 1882 to the 1940s. Notable buildings include the Pierce-Seawell House (c. 1882), Barnes House (c. 1886), Jonesboro Methodist Church Parsonage (c. 1885), Lonnie Thomas House (1941), and Jonesboro Baptist Church (1950).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Lee County Training School, also known as the W. B. Wicker School, is a historic school building located at Sanford, Lee County, North Carolina. It is a one-story brick building dating to 1927 with additions in 1934 and 1949. The building is characterized by large windows alternating with pilasters and was built by contactor A.L. “Link” Boykin, a leading member of Sanford’s black community. Construction funds were provided in part by the Rosenwald Fund, conceived in the 1910s by Southern black leader and educator Booker T. Washington. The Rosenwald schools were built across the south for black Americans in the early 20th century. It served as Sanford and Lee County's African American high school until it was decommissioned as a high school in 1969. Until the year 2019, classes for grade school were last held at the school in the late 1980s. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.The W. B. Wicker School is one of the oldest educational institutions in Lee County with almost a century of history behind its doors. Under leadership of William Bartelle Wicker, this school allowed African American children a to get an education during the years of segregation, Jim Crow, desegregation and through the late 60s post-segregation era. It was during this time that the school was re-named from Lee County Training School to W.B. Wicker in recognition of William Bartelle Wicker's dedication and perseverance in providing quality education to the students of Lee County.In 2001, Brick Capital Community Development Corporation (CDC), Lee County, the City of Sanford, and a local community Advisory Group worked together to restore the school. By November 2006, the revitalized school became the W. B. Wicker Business Campus and was home to Central Carolina Community College's Lifelong Learning Center, a four-star childcare center, and the Sanford business suites. From 2006 to 2018, Brick Capital CDC owned and managed the W. B. Wicker Business Campus.In 2018, Lee County purchased the W. B. Wicker School from Brick Capital CDC in order return it to the Lee County Board of Education and transform it into an elementary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) school. The school revitalized three historic parts of the Wicker main campus- the main building, auditorium and gymnasium and expanded the school with a new building. With these additions, the school now holds a population of over 900 students.

Lee County Courthouse is a historic courthouse located at Sanford, Lee County, North Carolina. It was built in 1908, and is a two-story rectangular brick building in the Classical Revival style. The east and west sides features monumental hexastyle porticoes supported by Ionic order brick columns. Atop the hipped roof is a small dome.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Seaboard Milling Company, also known as Seaboard Roller Mill and Broadway Roller Mills, is a historic roller mill located at Sanford, Lee County, North Carolina. It was built in 1915–1916, and is a three-story, brick building with a gable roof with stepped end parapets and traces of decorative exterior painting. It has a one-story metal-sided frame wing erected in two phases about 1920, and a one-story cinder-block office wing from the early 1950s.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

The houses are characterized as one story, story-and-a-half, or two stories in height, ranging in scale from compact bungalows and cottages to manorial residences.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Located in the district are the separately listed Railroad House and Temple Theatre. Other notable buildings include the Sanford Buggy Company (c. 1908), McCracken Building (c. 1910), Passenger Depot (c. 1900), City Hall (c. 1909), Coca-Cola Bottling Company (c. 1908), Masonic Lodge (c. 1924), Makepeace Building (1924), Wilrick Hotel (1925), Bowers Building (c. 1925), Cole Pontiac Building (c. 1925), Hubbards Shoe Store (1926), Carolina Hotel (1930), and former U. S. Post Office (c. 1935).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, with a boundary change in 2021.

Railroad House is a historic home located at Sanford, Lee County, North Carolina. It was built in 1872, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, three-bay, board-and-batten, Gothic Revival style frame cottage. The gable roof has wide overhanging eaves and "rafter brackets." It has a one-story rear wing, a single central interior chimney in the main block, and an exterior end chimney at the rear of the wing. It was built by the Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad for the depot agent. The house was moved to its present site in October 1962, across the street from its original location. The building is operated by the Railroad House Historical Association as a museum.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is located in the Downtown Sanford Historic District.

The Sanford Herald has a daily circulation of just over 9,000 and is published Tuesday through Saturday, and has published continuously since 1930. The Herald is a member of the Audit Bureau of Circulations and the North Carolina Press Association. It is published by the Paxton Media Group of Paducah, Kentucky. The paper announced on Dec. 8, 2019 that it would stop publishing a Sunday edition as of Jan. 7, 2020.
