Mahoningtown, Pennsylvania

The Mahoning River is a river in northeastern Ohio and a small portion of western Pennsylvania. Flowing primarily through several Ohio counties, it crosses the state line into Pennsylvania before joining with the Shenango River to form the Beaver River. The Mahoning River drops from 1,296 feet (395 m) at the headwaters near Winona to 761 feet (232 m) at the outfall near Mahoningtown, Pennsylvania. It is part of the Ohio River watershed. The name is said to derive from either the Lenape or Shawnee languages and mean "Deer Lick," as the area was once known for salt springs, but it's possible the name of the Mahoning and several other similarly named landmarks and places in western Pennsylvania (Manayunk, etc) could come from the Lenape, mënehokink (may-nuh-ho-keeng), meaning "place to get water."

The Shenango River is a principal tributary of the Beaver River, approximately 100 mi (160 km) long, in western Pennsylvania in the United States. It also briefly flows through small portions of northeastern Ohio. Via the Beaver and Ohio Rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River. The Shenango, whose name comes from the Iroquoian "Shanango," meaning "the beautiful one," rises in west-central Crawford County and initially flows northwestwardly into the Pymatuning Reservoir, which was formed in 1934 by the construction of a dam on the river. The lake turns to the south, widening into Ashtabula County, Ohio, and passing through Pymatuning State Park. Below the dam and after returning fully to Pennsylvania, the Shenango flows south-southeastwardly into Mercer County, flowing through Jamestown and Greenville before turning westwardly into Shenango River Lake, formed in 1965 by a United States Army Corps of Engineers dam. Below that dam, the Shenango flows southwestwardly through the communities of Sharpsville and Sharon (near which it briefly enters Trumbull County, Ohio); then south-southeastwardly past Farrell, Wheatland and West Middlesex into Lawrence County, where it passes New Castle and Oakland. It joins the Mahoning River to form the Beaver River, 3 mi (4.8 km) southwest of New Castle.Tributaries of the Shenango include the short Little Shenango River, which flows for its entire length in Mercer County and joins the Shenango from the east at Greenville; Pymatuning Creek, which flows into Shenango River Lake; and Neshannock Creek, which joins the river at New Castle.

Oakland is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census.

Taylor Township is a township in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was nine hundred and ninety-one at the time of the 2020 census, a decline from the figure of one thousand fifty-two that was tabulated in 2010.

Neshannock Creek is a 25.65 mi (41.28 km) long tributary to Shenango River that forms at the confluence of Cool Spring and Otter Creek in Mercer County and then flows south to Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. This creek is known for its fly fishing at Volant, Pennsylvania.Neshannock is a Native American name purported to mean "double stream".

South New Castle is a borough in central Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 649 at the 2020 census. It is primarily a residential community which lies south of the city of New Castle, and is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The borough will officially be annexed into a connecting township on January 1, 2026.

New Castle is a city in and the county seat of Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, United States. Located along the Shenango River at the mouth of Neshannock Creek, it is 43 miles (69 km) northwest of Pittsburgh near the Pennsylvania–Ohio border, approximately 17 miles (27 km) southeast of Youngstown, Ohio. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 21,926. The commercial center of a fertile agricultural region, New Castle is included in the northwestern part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.

The Cascade Center at the Riverplex is a shopping, dining, and entertainment complex located in downtown New Castle, Pennsylvania. Opened in 2006, the complex offers both indoor and outdoor facilities. It occupies much of the site of the Cascade, which was the first movie theater owned by Warner Bros. The complex is situated at the intersection of East Washington Street and Mill Street. As of 2013, Riverplex Partners, Inc. owns the complex. The top three stories are rented by Refresh Dental Management as their corporate headquarters.

The Lawrence County Courthouse is an historic, American courthouse building that is located in New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Scottish Rite Cathedral in New Castle, Pennsylvania, United States, was designed by Milwaukee architect R. G. Schmidt and built in 1925. First used in November 1926 as a meeting place for Masonic groups, it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. Unable to pay taxes during the Great Depression, the Masons lost the building to the county, but reacquired it in 1940 with the creation of the Cathedral Foundation. This non-profit foundation continues to operate the Cathedral today.
