Marblehead Light (Ohio)

Fort Sandoské was a French military fort, built about 1750 on what is now called the Marblehead Peninsula on the northern side of Sandusky Bay in Ohio, near the traditional portage place from the bay to Lake Erie. It was built at a site formerly occupied about 1745 by a trading-post run by mostly Pennsylvanian ("English") fur-traders, who had been given permission by Wyandot chief Nicolas Orontony. About 1748 or 1749, French soldiers from Fort Detroit expelled the English and took over the site. This specific site was never a British military outpost, but some historians asserted it had been. The English Fort Sandusky was not built until 1761 and it was constructed in a different location southeast of the bay. The future site of Venice, Ohio developed near here. That fort was overrun and destroyed in 1763 during Pontiac's War.There was much confusion about the affiliation of trading posts and forts around Sandusky Bay. The French briefly used Fort Sandoské to secure supply and communication between Fort Niagara and Fort Detroit. It was already abandoned by 1754, when French lieutenant and engineer Gaspard-Joseph Chaussegros de Léry passed through the area with forces to reinforce Fort Detroit. He sketched the remains of this fort's layout/plan and included it in a campaign journal, one of eight of his held by Laval University in Quebec.

Marblehead is a village in Ottawa County, Ohio, United States. The population was 865 at the 2020 census. It sits at the tip of the Marblehead Peninsula, which divides Lake Erie proper from Sandusky Bay. Marblehead is part of the area that is referred to regionally as Vacationland (which includes nearby Sandusky and the Lake Erie Islands) due to the large number of tourists who flock to the area in the summer months. It remains a popular vacation destination due to its lake frontage, ferry service to the Lake Erie Islands, quality sport fishery, the nearby Lakeside Chautauqua, and the Cedar Point amusement park. Marblehead is also home to the Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve, home to the only natural U.S. population of the Lakeside Daisy, an endangered species. Marblehead is home to the Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest continuously-operating lighthouse on the American side of the Great Lakes. The lighthouse is a part of the Marblehead Lighthouse State Park located within the village. Marblehead is also home to a United States Coast Guard station. Nearby, in Sandusky Bay, is Johnson's Island, a former Confederate officer prisoner of war camp during the Civil War. Marblehead is also commercially important as a major limestone producer. The limestone is mined in nearby quarries and transported by conveyor belt to the Marblehead loading dock, where it is loaded on commercial lake freighters. The blocks of stone used to construct the Stannard Rock Light on Lake Superior were cut at Marblehead and hauled to the site from 1877 to 1881.

First Congregational Church (First United Church of Christ, Congregational) is a historic church at 802 Prairie Street in Marblehead, Ohio. It was built in 1900 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Danbury Local School District is a school district in Northwest Ohio. The school district serves students who live in the city, community, and township of Danbury Twp., Marblehead, and Lakeside located in Ottawa County.

Lakeside is a private community and census-designated place in Danbury Township, Ottawa County, Ohio, United States, on the shores of Lake Erie. It was formed in 1873 by members of the Methodist Church and remains a church-affiliated vacation resort and United Methodist Annual Conference site. It is one of only a few continuously operating Independent Chautauquas that persist in the 21st century. Located just west of the village of Marblehead, the community is approximately one square mile in size. The entire community is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Lakeside Historic District. As an unincorporated community, Lakeside is governed by the Lakeside Association, a company whose CEO is the de facto leader of the community. Its current CEO is Kip Greenhill.

Benajah Wolcott House (Keeper's House) is a stone structure on the Danbury-Marblehead Peninsula, north of Sandusky Bay near Marblehead, Ohio. It is the oldest surviving home in Ottawa County. Historians believe it may have been the family home of the Wolcott family during the 1820s. It should not be confused with the wooden lighthouse keeper's house adjacent to the Marblehead Light, built in 1880.

Danbury High School (formerly Lakeside High School) is a public high school in Lakeside, Ohio. It is the only high school in the Danbury Local Schools district. Their mascot is the Lakers. Danbury is noted to be a small successful high school due to its reduced class size of around 25-40 students per graduating class.

Johnson's Island is a 300-acre (120 ha) island in Sandusky Bay, located on the coast of Lake Erie, 3 miles (4.8 km) from the city of Sandusky, Ohio. It was the site of a prisoner-of-war camp for Confederate officers captured during the American Civil War. Initially, Johnson's Island was the only Union prison exclusively for Confederate officers but eventually held privates, political prisoners, persons sentenced to court martial and spies. Civilians who were arrested as guerrillas, or bushwhackers, were also imprisoned on the island. During its three years of operation, more than 15,000 men were incarcerated there. The island is named after L. B. Johnson, the owner of the island beginning about 1852. It was originally named 'Bull's Island' by its first owner, Epaphras W. Bull, around 1809 (later misspelled "Epaproditus" Bull, by local-historians).

The Hotel Breakers, opened in 1905, is a large historic Lake Erie resort hotel located at 1 Cedar Point Drive in the Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio.

The Cedar Point Light is a restored lighthouse on the grounds of the Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, United States. The original lighthouse at the site was built in 1838, and a front range light was added to the station in 1853. A new lighthouse, the structure which stands today, was completed in 1862. This light served as a navigational aid until 1909, in which year the light tower was removed from atop the dwelling. In the ensuing years it was kept in use by the federal government as a buoy depot, a radio beacon station and a search and rescue boat station. These last duties were transferred to Marblehead Coast Guard Station in 1975, and the Cedar Point station was discontinued. Cedar Point Amusement Park acquired the structure in 1987 and spent the decade refurbishing the dwelling and reconstructing the light tower. The lighthouse opened as part of a vacation cottage development in 2001.The Cedar Point Light was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
