Wheeling is a city in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Located almost entirely in Ohio County, of which it is the county seat, it lies along the Ohio River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and also contains a tiny portion extending into Marshall County. Wheeling is located about 60 miles (96 km) west of Pittsburgh and is the principal city of the Wheeling metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 27,062, and the metro area had a population of 139,513. It is the fifth-largest city in West Virginia, and the largest in the state’s Northern Panhandle. Wheeling was originally a settlement in the British colony of Virginia, and later the second-largest city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. During the American Civil War, Wheeling was the host of the Wheeling Conventions that led to the formation of West Virginia, and it was the first capital of the new state. Due to its location along major transportation routes, including the Ohio River, National Road, and the B&O Railroad, Wheeling became a manufacturing center in the late nineteenth century. After the closing of factories and substantial population loss following World War II, Wheeling's major industries now include healthcare, education, law and legal services, entertainment and tourism, and energy. From the acceptance of the new state of West Virginia into the union on June 20, 1863, until the Restored Government of Virginia's move to Alexandria in August of the same year, Wheeling was the state capital of both West Virginia and Virginia.

The Linsly School, formerly known as the Linsly Military Institute, is a boarding and day school located in Wheeling, West Virginia. It was founded in 1814 by Noah Linsly and chartered by the State of Virginia in the same year. The school is the oldest preparatory school west of the Alleghenies. It was originally known as the Lancastrian Academy.

Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy was a private Catholic all-girls school in the city of Wheeling in the U.S. state of West Virginia.

Wheeling University (WU, formerly Wheeling Jesuit University) is a private Roman Catholic university in Wheeling, West Virginia. It was founded as Wheeling College in 1954 by the Society of Jesus (also known as the Jesuits) and was a Jesuit institution until 2019. Wheeling University competes in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as a member of the Mountain East Conference.

Woodridge is a historic home located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. It is a 1+1⁄2- to 2+1⁄2-story frame house clad in clapboard siding and sits on a foundation of stone and concrete. The original section was built in 1831, with additions made about 1880. It features a centered portico supported by four square columns. Also on the property is a contributing stone wall and pillars. United States Congressman Lewis Steenrod resided at the house from about 1845 to 1862.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Temple Shalom is a Reform Jewish synagogue located at 23 Bethany Pike, Wheeling, West Virginia, in the United States. The congregation dates from 1849, with the current synagogue building completed in 1957, as the Woodside Temple.

The Reymann Brewing Company of Wheeling, West Virginia was the state's largest and most successful pre-Prohibition brewery. It began as the P.P. Beck Brewery in 1847. Beck formed a partnership with A. Reymann which continued until 1863 when Reymann gained full ownership. A small sales book lists the Reymann depots in several cities in Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, including Charleston, Huntington, Canton, Marietta, Pittsburgh, and Erie. In the 1890s, one cold storage room and saloon operated by Reymann Brewing was on land rented to the company by President William McKinley and his wife. The brewery produced as much as 28,000 barrels of beer in the early teens. The Reymann company's bottling department employees worked with engineers from the Studebaker Corporation to design a beer truck. The truck proved so successful that it was featured in an early edition of the Western Brewer [an industry publication].

The William Miles Tiernan House, also known as the Tiernan-Riley House, is a historic home located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. It was built in 1900–01, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, L-shaped, Georgian Revival-style brick dwelling. It features two-story Ionic order pilasters that flank the one-story entrance portico. The house was built for William M. Tiernan, who was vice-president of the Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. It is located in the Woodsdale-Edgewood Neighborhood Historic District.

Woodsdale–Edgewood Neighborhood Historic District is a national historic district located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. The district encompasses 969 contributing buildings and is primarily residential, developed between 1888 and 1945. A number of popular architectural styles are represented including Shingle Style, Queen Anne, Tudor Revival, American Foursquare, Colonial Revival and Bungalow style. The district also includes four Lustron houses. Notable non-residential buildings include the Edgwood Christian Mission Alliance Church (1932), St. John's Episcopal Chapel (1913), Mount Carmel Monastery (1915) designed by Frederick F. Faris (1870-1927), and Good Shepherd Home (1912). Also located in the district are the separately listed H. C. Ogden House and William Miles Tiernan House.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

"Edemar", also known as Stifel Fine Arts Center, is a historic house and national historic district located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. The district includes two contributing buildings and two contributing structures. The main house was built between 1910 and 1914, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, brick-and-concrete Classical Revival mansion with a steel frame. The front facade features a full-width portico with pediment supported by six Corinthian order columns. Also on the property are a contributing brick, tiled-roofed three-bay carriage barn/garage; fish pond; and formal garden. The Stifel family occupied the home until 1976, when the family gave it to the Oglebay Institute to be used as the Stifel Fine Arts Center.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

H. C. Ogden House, also known as the Wise-Ogden House, is a historic home located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. It was built in 1893, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, T-shaped, Queen Anne-style frame dwelling. It features a deep, full-width front porch with Doric order columns, a round tower with domed roof, and coursed wood shingles. The house has 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 1 half-bath, 1 kitchen, and 9 additional rooms. The house was built for Herschel Coombs Ogden (1869-1943), a publisher, community leader, and businessman significant in the history of West Virginia.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. It is located in the Woodsdale-Edgewood Neighborhood Historic District.

Lang-Hess House is a historic home located at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. It was built about 1865, and is a two-story sandstone building with Italianate design details. An attached ‘sun porch’ was added to the house about 1935. Its builder was associated with the architect and engineers of the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, and is believed to have used “extra” sandstone to build his residence following the work on bridge.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
