Rivington and Blackrod High School

Rivington Park Independent School was a private school located in Rivington, Lancashire that closed in 2014. It was founded in 2004 by Michael Ruaux, whose daughter, Emily, is a nationally ranked fencer. Ruaux also founded Rivington Park Fencing Club, which continues to operate. The school provided day-school education for children aged five to sixteen. The school had nearly closed in 2009 but was rescued by injection of funds from parents. The school also offered GCSE and BTEC courses for senior pupils and had plans to provide A-Level courses for sixth form pupils as well as boarding provision in what had been the school's nursery. The nursery closed down following an adverse Ofsted report published on 3 January 14 prompted by "concern raised with Ofsted regarding child ratios, supervision and the effectiveness of the key person system". The rest of the school closed without warning to staff or parents on 12 December 2014 at which time it had about 35 pupils on roll.

Terraced Gardens of Rivington (Leverhulmes Former Gardens) is a landscaped woodland on the hillside of Rivington Pike, in Rivington Parish in the Chorley Borough of Lancashire, England, originally designed as a Garden by T.H Mawson and built as curtilage to a home of the soap magnate Viscount Leverhulme, as such the area is not part of Lever Park. Today the former gardens are Grade II listed and contain 11 Grade II structures. The design had three elements, the upper part being in the romanesque architectural style, the lower section known as the Ravine a woodland incorporated into the design with a manmade stream passing through, and a former Japanese-style garden has the remains of a manmade pond, made from Pulmonite. The gardens are today leased to Rivington Heritage Trust by United Utilities and are undergoing restoration and preservation.

Rivington Pike is a hill on Winter Hill, part of the West Pennine Moors at Rivington, Chorley in Lancashire, England. The nearest towns are Adlington and Horwich. The land and building are owned and managed by Chorley Council. The Pike Tower is a prominent local landmark and is located at the summit, it is part of Lever Park. The area is popular with hill walkers and for mountain biking.

Horwich railway station was located in Lancashire, England on a branch from the Manchester to Preston Line. It was closed to passengers on 27 September 1965 and to goods on 25 April 1966. Opened on 14 February 1870 to serve the town of Horwich (now in Greater Manchester) but by 1884 the land to the east of the branch line, south of the town had been chosen for a major locomotive works. Horwich railway station closed to passenger traffic on 27 September 1965, and goods the next year. Thirty-four years later Horwich Parkway railway station opened in 1999, adjacent to the Reebok Stadium. The nearest railway station to Horwich is now Blackrod. Grundy Hill was the former home stadium of Horwich RMI association football club in Horwich, Greater Manchester, England, near the Horwich Leisure Centre. The ground had a capacity of approximately 5,000 spectators, with 500 being seated. The terraces were covered on three sides and featured railings.Grundy Hill's pitch famously sloped both downwards and also side-to-side, and was reputed to have its own microclimate. "Grundy Hill sloped 16 feet (4.9 m) from top diagonal to bottom diagonal and had the contours of corrugated iron, but until the new footballing nanny state prohibited such extreme drops, the ground was Horwich's prime asset." One fan recalled that, as a boy, it was his impression "that the base of the corner flag was level with the top of the crossbar – on the same goal line." From the stands, fans had views over the field's slopes to the Rivington Pike.In 1994, the football club sold Grundy Hill to a housing developer, and moved several miles south to Leigh's Hilton Park in time for the 1995-1996 season. The move also led to the club renaming itself Leigh RMI after its new home town, although the club would subsequently change its name to Leigh Genesis F.C. The University of Bolton stadium, the current home of the Bolton Wanderers, is located near Horwich, within sight of the old location of Grundy Hill. The stadium was subsequently leveled, and a residential housing development now sits on the former site of Grundy Hill.

Great House Barn is a 16th-century barn and Listed building in Rivington, Lancashire, England. Built as a tithe barn it is believed to be one of the oldest of its type in the county and is a Grade II listed building.

Rivington Hall is a Grade II* listed building in Rivington, Lancashire, England. It was the manor house for the Lords of the Manor of Rivington. The hall is of various builds as successor to a 15th-century timber-framed courtyard house that was built near to the present building of which no trace remains. It is a private residence.

Holy Trinity Church, commonly known as Horwich Parish Church, is a Grade II listed building in Horwich, Greater Manchester, England. It is an active Church of England parish church and part of the Deane deanery in the archdeaconry of Bolton, diocese of Manchester. Holy Trinity Church is now part of the United Benefice of Horwich and Rivington, which includes the other two Anglican churches in Horwich, St Catherine's Church and St Elizabeth's Church, and Rivington Anglican Church.

Lower Rivington Reservoir is at the end of the Rivington chain of reservoirs in Lancashire, England, with Upper Rivington Reservoir to the north, and Rivington Water Treatment Works to the south. The Rivington chain primarily supplies 70,000 households in the Wigan area. The chain was built to supply Liverpool. The engineer for the Rivington reservoirs was Thomas Hawksley and construction for the Liverpool Corporation Waterworks took place between 1852 and 1857. The Lower Rivington reservoir has two dams - the Millstone Embankment, which is 2,120 feet (646 m) long and 40-foot (12.2 m) high, and the Horwich Embankment, which is 1,660 feet (506 m) long and 61-foot (18.6 m) high. Filter beds were constructed at the foot of the Horwich Embankment, The original sand filters were replaced by a new treatment plant from where a pipeline runs to the service reservoirs at Eccleston, St Helens. The River Douglas was diverted through a paved channel in a deep cutting into Lower Rivington.On the Rivington bank of the reservoir is a folly which is a replica of Liverpool Castle, and to the south-west is the Headless Cross at Grimeford Village. There is an activity centre offering watersports and land-based activities on the Anderton bank of the reservoir.

Horwich was, from 1872 to 1974, a local government district centred on the town of Horwich in the administrative county of Lancashire, England.

Horwich ( HORR-itch) is a town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, Greater Manchester, England. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, it is 5.3 miles (8.5 km) southeast of Chorley, 5.8 miles (9.3 km) northwest of Bolton and 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Manchester. It lies at the southern edge of the West Pennine Moors with the M61 motorway passing close to the south and west. At the 2011 Census, Horwich had a population of 20,067.Horwich emerged in the Middle Ages as a hunting chase. Streams flowing from the moors were harnessed to provide power for bleachworks and other industry at the start of the Industrial Revolution. The textile industry became a major employer and after 1884 the construction of the railway works caused the population of the town to increase dramatically. The old industries have closed and urban regeneration has been led by out of town developments, particularly at Middlebrook, which, since 1997 has been the base of Bolton Wanderers football club, who play at the University of Bolton Stadium, having moved from Burnden Park near Bolton town centre.

Red Moss is a wetland mossland in Greater Manchester, located south of Horwich and east of Blackrod. This is a national Site of Special Scientific Interest in the United Kingdom, due to its biodiversity and undisturbed character. Pollen analysis has revealed the first peat deposits of the northwest's mosslands to be from around 8,000 years BC making Red Moss an impressive 10,000 years old. Red Moss covers an area of 47.2 hectares. A severed female head was discovered in Red Moss in the 19th century dating from the Bronze Age or early Iron Age.Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council owns most of the moss, but parts of the site are also owned by British Rail and United Utilities.
