Pewit Island

Hamford Water is a 2,185.8-hectare (5,401-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest between Walton-on-the-Naze and Harwich in Essex. The site is a tidal inlet which has marsh grasslands, creeks, mud and sand flats, salt marshes, islands and beaches. It is described by Natural England as "of international importance for breeding little terns and wintering dark-bellied brent geese, wildfowl and waders, and of national importance for many other bird species." Rare plants include hog's fennel and slender hare's-ear. The main invertebrates are worms and thin-shelled molluscs. The largest island, Horsey Island, can be reached on foot at low tide across The Wade from Kirby-le-Soken. It is also a Ramsar site, a Special Protection Area, a Nature Conservation Review site, and most of it is a National Nature Reserve. Two small areas, Skippers Island and John Weston Nature Reserve, are managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust.Most of Bramble Island (now part of the mainland) is used by Exchem for explosives testing.The area was used as the basis for Arthur Ransome's novel Secret Water.

Horsey Island is an island in the parish of Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex. It lies in Hamford Water and is part of the Hamford Water National Nature Reserve, managed by Natural England. Permission is required to visit.

Little Oakley is a village in Essex, England, on the western outskirts of Harwich. The parish population at the 2011 census was 1,171.It is the site of a fourth-century Roman villa, excavated between 1951 and 1975.Just north-east of the village is Little Oakley Channel Deposit, a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is the site of former channel of the River Thames during an interglacial period about 575,000 years ago.

Skipper's Island is a 94.3-hectare (233-acre) nature reserve north of Kirby-le-Soken in Essex, England. It is owned and managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust.The highest part of the island has thorn thickets, separated by grassy rides. The lowest land is saltmarsh, and there is also extensive rough pasture with brackish pools. Flora include sea hog's fennel and lax-flowered sea-lavender, and there are breeding birds such as shelducks and oystercatchers.The island is connected to the mainland by two causeways, and access is only by prior arrangement with the trust.

Little Oakley Channel Deposit is a three-hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Little Oakley in Essex, England. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.This site exposed a former channel of the River Thames during an interglacial period around 575,000 years ago, probably where it met the early River Medway. The site was found in 1939, but not excavated until the 1980s. Many fossils were found, including rhinoceros and giant deer, many freshwater shells and an extensive pollen record, allowing geologists to reconstruct the fauna and flora of the time.As the site has been filled in, no geology is visible.

Little Oakley Football Club is a football club based in Little Oakley, Essex, England. They are currently members of the Essex Senior League and play at the Memorial Ground.

The Sokens is a name often used to describe the area containing the traditional parishes of Thorpe, Kirby and Walton, which now lie in Tendring district in the Naze area of northeast Essex. The significance of this grouping is now mostly historical. The name 'Soken' is derived from the Saxon 'soc' or 'soca', signifying immunity, peculiar privileges and jurisdiction. It refers in particular to the power to administer justice within itself, and likewise the circuit within which such power was exercised. Among others was the claim that no bailiff except the lord's bailiff could arrest any person within the parish.

Michaelstowe Hall is a manor house in the village of Ramsey near Harwich, Essex, England. The present Michaelstowe Hall dates from 1903, but the Michaelstowe Estate has a long and varied history which can readily be traced back to the Domesday Book of 1086. Located a few hundred yards to the east of Ramsey Parish Church, Essex, Michaelstowe Hall is set back from the main Harwich road in 17 acres of landscaped grounds.Grade II listed in 1987, the main three-storey 1903 structure is of red Berkshire brick with white stone facings and a slated roof. Electric lighting was provided from the private lighting plant located near the stables. The main residence included seven family bedrooms, two fitted bathrooms, and a billiards room. A luggage lift and speaking tube served all three floors. The stable block is surmounted by a clock tower and provided stalls for eight horses and a garage for three motor cars or carriages.The 1777 Andre and Chapman map of Essex shows an earlier Michaelstow Hall on the main road immediately adjacent to St. Michael's church at the top of Ramsey Hill, four hundred yards west of the current location. This earlier building mysteriously disappears completely from local maps around 1850. In February 2011 Michaelstowe Hall was sold to Southend Care Ltd. Since new ownership it has been renamed as Ramsay Manor. Ramsay Manor has had extensive refurbishment in order to modernise the building to bring it to the forefront of elderly residential care.

Ramsey and Parkeston (formerly just Ramsey) is a civil parish in the Tendring district, in the county of Essex, England. The parish includes the villages of Ramsey and Parkeston. In 2011 the parish had a population of 2343. The parish touches Arwarton, Great Oakley, Harkstead, Harwich, Little Oakley, Wix and Wrabness. There are 13 listed buildings in Ramsey and Parkeston.

Harwich and Dovercourt High School is a secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in Harwich in the English county of Essex. It was named the Sir Anthony Deane School until 1974, and was then known as the Harwich School. The school faced controversy in 2006 when parents campaigned to remove existing Headteacher, Jacky Froggat, over concerns regarding falling standards. She was replaced by Nigel Mountford, who had been serving as the acting head teacher of the Harwich School, Under his leadership the school was transformed into a positive learning atmosphere with a new code of conduct and praise scheme for pupils who perform well, his appointment came just one week after the school was saved from going into special measures, OFSTED reported the school had shown significant improvement. In 2011 the school relaunched, changing its name from "The Harwich School" to "Harwich and Dovercourt High School" Following a period of ill health, Nigel Mountford retired and was succeeded by Headteacher Robert Garrett in 2014. In July 2016 following an OFSTED inspection the school was given a Good rating.The school was converted to academy status in August 2012, and became a member of the Sigma Multi Academy Trust on 1 June 2017. The school continues to coordinate with Essex County Council for admissions. The school had a House system, with coloured ties to show membership of the houses, but has abolished it and is now using coloured ties to show membership of each year group. Year 7 has green striped ties, Year 8 has red striped ties, Year 9 has orange striped ties, Year 10 has blue striped ties, and Year 11 has yellow striped ties.
