Gaer, Newport

Maesglas or Maes-glas is a neighbourhood in the south west of the city of Newport, South Wales. In the 16th century it was recorded as Greenfield but the Welsh language name Maesglas has remained the more widely used, among English speakers. It lies in the Gaer ward directly north of the A48 Southern Distributor Road, south of Cardiff Road and south-west of the South Wales Main Line railway. The Newport-born author Leslie Thomas wrote of Maesglas: Maesglas was a penniless place everybody called Moscow. When it was built in the thirties the winter was of such Soviet severity that the frost-bound workmen gave it the name. Poor though it was, nobody who ever lived there can today mention its name or its Russian nickname without breaking into a grin. This quote is incorporated into a mural telling the history of the estate, painted on the side of the Maesglas shops.

The Inmos microprocessor factory, also known as the Inmos factory, previously known as Newport Wafer Fab, now known as Nexperia Newport, is a semiconductor fabrication plant for Inmos built in Newport, Wales, UK in 1980. It has gone through numerous changes in ownership. Since July 2021, the factory has been owned by Nexperia. In November 2022, Chinese state-owned Dutch-headquartered Nexperia was asked to divest 86% of its ownership, and a year later was sold to Vishay Intertechnology. The architects of the award-winning high-tech building were the Richard Rogers Partnership and the factory was the first building in Wales which Richard Rogers designed.

Newport Ebbw Junction TMD was a traction maintenance depot located in Newport, Wales. The depot was situated on the Ebbw Valley Railway and was near Newport railway station. The depot code was EJ.

St Woolos Cemetery (officially named Newport and St Woolos new Cemetery) is the main cemetery in the city of Newport, Wales situated one mile to the west of the Church in Wales cathedral known by the same name. It contains four chapels, and various ornate memorials dating back to the early Victorian period, and was the first municipally constructed cemetery in England and Wales. It remains in use to this present day as the main cemetery for burials in Newport, and has been used as a filming location for the BBC series, Doctor Who. The cemetery is listed on the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales.

Newport West Central railway station is a proposed station on the Ebbw Valley Railway in the city of Newport, Wales.

Stelvio House on Bassaleg Road, Newport, Wales was the home of Charles Henry Bailey, a 19th century industrialist. Bailey, an engineer by training, owned the Tyne Engine Works at Newport and also published a number of almanacs mainly related to shipping matters; including C. H. Bailey's Book of translations: 5,200 marine technical terms in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish & Norwegian, C. H. Bailey's Tables of Distances from Port to Port and C. H. Bailey's Book of Useful Information. Stelvio House, in the Stow Park area of the city, then and now its most prosperous area, was built in two phases in 1893 and in 1912. Bailey died in 1907, but his widow continued development of the house and laid out the gardens between 1914 and 1920. Stelvio House was spot-listed on 20 March 1996 by Cadw in recognition of its architectural and historic importance. The developers, and site owners, McCarthy & Stone almost immediately demolished part of the house in what a judge called a "cynical commercial act". They were later fined £200,000, at the time, the largest fine recorded by the Institute of Historic Building Conservation.

Tredegar Park (Welsh: Parc Tredegyr) is a community (civil parish) of the city of Newport. It is named after the nearby park, although the community covers a much smaller area.

The Newport rail accident occurred near Newport, Wales on Saturday night, 28 September 1907. A mineral train from Rogerstone to Cardiff and a passenger train from Cardiff collided near the Ebbw Junction, killing 1 and injuring at least 12. The passenger train left Cardiff at 19:42.The one fatality was Albert Workman - the driver of the mineral train - a married man with two children. Also injured was Ernest Day, aged 24, of Cardiff, fireman on the mineral engine. The passenger train was travelling at 50 mph at the time. The driver and fireman on the express train were thrown from their engine by the force of the impact, as was the fireman of the mineral engine. A number of passengers were also slightly injured. According to the Board of Trade report, the accident was caused by the signalman in Park Junction signal box pulling the wrong lever. This allowed the heavy goods train onto the down gradient and cross the main line into the path of the passenger train at Ebbw Junction. Even though he realised his mistake and returned the signals to danger, there was not enough time for either train to avoid the collision.

The Mansion House was the official residence of the Mayor of Newport, South Wales until 2009. It also offered hospitality and accommodation to official visitors to the city from overseas. It is located in Stow Park Circle, a short distance west of the centre of Newport. In 2010 plans were approved to convert the Mansion House for use as a register office and it duly opened in July 2011 after a major refurbishment.

Duffryn (Welsh: Dyffryn) is a large housing estate in the southwest of the city of Newport, south Wales comprising a large portion of the Tredegar Park electoral district (ward). Built on land belonging to Tredegar House, it was completed in 1978 and at the time won several awards for its design. The layout of the estate, as viewed from above, is that of large terraces undulating around a central wooded area. Originally a council estate, Duffryn is now a mix of private ownership and Newport City Homes RSL (Registered Social Landlord) properties. The design of the estate is the result of a council competition. It was won by a consortium committed to the theories of planning devised in the architecture department of Cambridge University in the 1960s. The District Amenities Centre that was planned for the south-west corner of the 96-acre site was never built, so the plan of a largely self-sufficient community was not realised.Despite the relative recent development of the estate, the name Duffryn is an ancient name for the wider township of the ancient parish of Bassaleg. There are three secondary schools in Duffryn: John Frost School, St. Joseph's RC High School and the Welsh-medium Ysgol Gyfun Gwent Is Coed. In 2006, John Frost School (known then as Duffryn High School) was the filming location of the Doctor Who episode School Reunion, filmed in late-summer 2005. The majority of the estate is heated by district heating system which is fuelled by biomass.
